August 15 - August 21, 2011
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have batch of Dead spanning a decade in Grateful Dead history, 1979-1989.
Our first selection is the first set from 12/7/79 in Indianapolis, where there's loads of great stuff in this 11 song set, including a trio of songs they were working on for the Go To Heaven album. Please note there is a tape cut at the end of Music Never Stoped: New Minglewood Blues ,Tennessee Jed , Me And My Uncle > Big River ,Don't Ease Me In , > El Paso ,Big Railroad Blues , Easy To Love You , > It's All Over Now ,Althea ,The Music Never Stopped.
Next is music from Long Beach, CA, on 12/13/80, where we have the start of the second set, featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain>Playing In The Band. Like the previous selection, this was drawn from the cassette master. The head of Scarlet is missing due to the “record” button being hit a moment too late, but what is included here is typically hot late-1980 Dead. Most of the shows in the month+ after the Radio City gigs were excellent.
Lastly this week we have the entire first set from 12/30/89 in Oakland, the always-great night-before-New-Year's-Eve. The entire set is extremely solid, and includes the first Bertha> Good Lovin' ,> Sugaree ,Walkin' Blues, Jack-A-Roe ,When I Paint My Masterpiece, West L.A. Fadeaway ,The Music Never Stopped..
Be sure to return here next week for more great tunes from the vault. As always, we encourage you to write with questions or comments, or just to say hello, to the email address below.
