Grateful Dead

December 10 - December 16

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

This week we have music from 1971, 1977, 1979 and 1984, a little bit for everyone. Except from the1990s. And the 1960s. We’ll work on that for an upcoming week.

Our first selection this week is from 12/4/71 at the Felt Forum in New York City. By this time, it was quite common to split an “Other One” with a cowboy tune, but this is a very rare jam that features cowboy tunes sandwiching an “Other One.” The jam consists of The Other One>Mexicali Blues>The Other One>Wharf Rat. Very unique indeed. It’s always amazing that in the course of a half hour, the Grateful Dead could dabble in hard core psychedelic music, country music, and end it all with a great American song, Wharf Rat.

Next up from 1977 is this outstanding Not Fade Away>Wharf Rat>Around and Around from 10/11/77 in Norman, OK. This show was suggested by Dick, along with 12/19/73 and 9/21/72, as a prime candidate for Dick’s Picks Vol. 1. This version of Not Fade Away features some of the most inspired and intense riffs this song ever saw. Jerry and Co. are simply on fire. Although a term usually reserved for 1968-1969 Grateful Dead, Dick considered this music a stunning piece of “primal” Dead.

From 12/10/79 in Kansas City, Kansas, we have this second set jam featuring Easy to Love You>Let It Grow>He’s Gone>Truckin’. This was a very rare second set Let It Grow, but it worked beautifully in this slot. And we’ve had some requests for Easy to Love You, so there you have it.

Finally from this week, we have this incredible first set closing combination of Bird Song, Let It Grow from 7/6/84 at Alpine. Simply a stunning, jammed out one-two punch before heading into a terrific second set.

Check back next Monday for more great music from the vault. We don’t know what we’ll play yet, but we expect it to be good. As always, feel free to email comments or questions to address below. It’s always great to hear from you.

does the whining ever stop?

all these years after Jerrys dead and that is one thing I dont miss...all the know it alls and whiners who luv to be monday morning quarterbacks. By the end of my tenure on tour I was so sick of the heads that knew what the boys SHOULD have played or COULD have done better.

Does God look down on the boys in the barroom
Mainly forsaken but surely not judged?
Jacks, kings, and aces, their faces in wine
Do Lord deliver our kind

WARNING: Sirius needs to dump Lemiuex

Dear Heads: Please contact Sirius to suggest someone else provides their "Today in Grateful Dead History" segment. I have never been more disappointed in the channel. Lemieux has access to the vault to provide rare uncirculating nuggests and he chooses the most ridiculous choices for his daily segment.
For example, today (Dec. 16) he chooses an average Feels like a Stranger (not even from Dec. 16), instead of a multitude of other amazing segments, such as 1968 (Mickey and the Hartbeats), 1986 (Neville Brothers), 1992 (Dark Star), or an amazing 1994 Eternity with Bradford Marsalis that I would LOVE to hear. And he consistently

It is almost embarassing to hear him "ummmm" and "uhhh" for the entirety of the segment. I feel bad for the guy. Radio is a different game, you have to prepare a little bit, write some script down so you don't sound like a completely unprepared noob when you get on the air. Please folks, contact Sirius at 877-337-4748.

all i know is something like a ........

...... this bird song that is presently raging in the background from my nice dynaudio speakers quite loud is ridiculous. phil's bass is as crisp and crunchy and fat as I have EVER HEARD it sound, including latter-day p & f's material, he thumps and jerry is so fluid and brent, on the gorgeous harmonies w jerry wow, and the nice piano i'll show you snow and rain snow and rain snow and rain aaahhhhhh

okay so i've been puffin', but legally, ya know what i'm saying, like, doctor's orders, legal in my state california but the fed see it differently, morning comes she follows a path to the river shore ............. incredible stuff

what's the name of that song you're playing?-
it's easy to love you- it's the dead, i replied.
