December 10 - December 16
This week we have music from 1971, 1977, 1979 and 1984, a little bit for everyone. Except from the1990s. And the 1960s. We’ll work on that for an upcoming week.
Our first selection this week is from 12/4/71 at the Felt Forum in New York City. By this time, it was quite common to split an “Other One” with a cowboy tune, but this is a very rare jam that features cowboy tunes sandwiching an “Other One.” The jam consists of The Other One>Mexicali Blues>The Other One>Wharf Rat. Very unique indeed. It’s always amazing that in the course of a half hour, the Grateful Dead could dabble in hard core psychedelic music, country music, and end it all with a great American song, Wharf Rat.
Next up from 1977 is this outstanding Not Fade Away>Wharf Rat>Around and Around from 10/11/77 in Norman, OK. This show was suggested by Dick, along with 12/19/73 and 9/21/72, as a prime candidate for Dick’s Picks Vol. 1. This version of Not Fade Away features some of the most inspired and intense riffs this song ever saw. Jerry and Co. are simply on fire. Although a term usually reserved for 1968-1969 Grateful Dead, Dick considered this music a stunning piece of “primal” Dead.
From 12/10/79 in Kansas City, Kansas, we have this second set jam featuring Easy to Love You>Let It Grow>He’s Gone>Truckin’. This was a very rare second set Let It Grow, but it worked beautifully in this slot. And we’ve had some requests for Easy to Love You, so there you have it.
Finally from this week, we have this incredible first set closing combination of Bird Song, Let It Grow from 7/6/84 at Alpine. Simply a stunning, jammed out one-two punch before heading into a terrific second set.
Check back next Monday for more great music from the vault. We don’t know what we’ll play yet, but we expect it to be good. As always, feel free to email comments or questions to address below. It’s always great to hear from you.

Excellant primal Dead!!!
I agree with the above poster that said this whole site is REALLY running much too slow. It is becoming a problem that I do not have with other sites so I don't think it's on my end. I also agree that it would be nice to hear stuff that has been unreleased. That being said....A HUGE THANK YOU for the listening party this past weekend and a Happy Holidays to ALL. Especially Lily Allen...We love you.
PS Ed....Can your cats possibly reunite for a holiday show one off?
VIVA THE HAIRBALL!!!
Is that one of the very first Easy to Love You's? Brents voice is so soft and sweet...but what really gets me is the alternate lyrics. I think maybe I read those somewhere but Im pretty sure thats the first I ever heard it. I was at first nite of cap center when they busted it out. It was a great addition on spring and summer tour until Brents end.

Thank you all
the weakest taper's section yet IMO. Only the first sequence was listenable. Why with the variety that you have available did you repeat not one, but two songs out of four sequences. Let It Grow and Wharf Rat?
I'll chalk it up to the approaching Solstice slowing your creativity down to a standstill.
2 stars for the Other One sequence. zero for the rest.
my 2 cents.
Man.. morning, coffee, new batch of Dead... ain't nothin like it. Well, being there, of course... and maybe a spliff to temper the coffee.. but we won't even get into all that.........
That short sweet jam out of He's Gone, real pretty
Nice bit between Truckin' - Drumz too
And that Uncle -> Other1 -> Mexicali is surely somethin else
Choice bits this week, Thanks once again DL!
what posts are you reading, exactly??
Why are you guys all wrapped up in the technicalities of drum beats here and drum beats there? As the man said "Just go with the flow" Who gives a hoot where it was played, or how many drum beats followed the bit in the middle or whatever. Music is for listening to. Then listen to it. There is no need for the technical breakdown. Least thats it from where I hear it.
You can do more Brent tunes but ya can't make me listen.
I think it would be great if they did a lot more Brent songs. I know they are out there so how about it!
