December 27, 2010-January 2, 2011
Hello! We hope your holidays are going well and that you're as excited as we are about 2011. At least, in the GD world there is plenty of upcoming activity to be excited about!
Our first selection this week is from 1/24/70 in Honolulu, HI, featuring Cumberland Blues, Cold Rain and Snow, Me and My Uncle, King Bee, Mason's Children, Black Peter. This is Tom Constanten's final show as an official member of the Grateful Dead. The Hawaii shows were part of a great month of January, 1970 for the Grateful Dead, a month that began with two wonderful shows at the Fillmore East on January 2 and 3, and ended with the New Orleans bust. OK, maybe that last event wasn't so great, but it did inspire one of the most famous the band's lyrics.
Our next selection is from 9/6/88 at Capital Center in Landover, MD, and features the entire second set jam and encore, made up of Estimated Prophet > He's Gone > Drums > Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away; Brokedown Palace. This was the fourth and final night of the Cap Center '88 run, made most famous by 9/3/88 performance of Ripple as the second encore.
Lastly this week, and appropriate as we end 2010, we have New Year's music from 12/31/89 in Oakland, featuring the midnight jam of Space/Balloon Drop>Iko Iko, Victim or the Crime>Dark Star. This was the first California Dark Star since 7/13/84, and the place went wild, as you can hear. This run of shows was recorded to 24-track tape, so a proper live album can be mixed and produced from these shows someday, hopefully.
Be sure to stop by next week for more great tunes. And have a Happy New Year! May your 2011 be a great year!
