Welcome back to our continuing holiday editions of the Tapers’ Section. This week we have some New Year’s themed music, although not all from New Year’s Eve, but from the time around then.
Our first stop will be the magnificent concert on 12/29/77, a life-changing night for a lot of Dead Heads with whom we’ve spoken. This, of course, featured the return of China>Rider after a three-plus year absence. From that magical night, we have the centerpiece of the night, Playing In The Band>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>China Doll>Jam. The rest of this concert is certainly worth seeking out, so do find yourself a copy of Dick’s Picks Vol. 10 and enjoy it.
Next up, from 10 years plus a day later on 12/30/89, we have the post-Drums sequence of I Will Take You Home>The Other One>Standing On The Moon>One More Saturday Night, Baby Blue, which is every bit the equal of the post-Drums sequences from 12/27&28/89 that we played for you last week here at the Tapers’ Section. Dynamite stuff indeed.
Finally this week, to get you all in the mood for the big New Year’s Eve festivities, we have my all time favourite midnight piece of music from a New Year’s Eve concert, Sugar Magnolia>Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from 12/31/78, the famous Closing of Winterland concert. This was the concert that went on and on and on, filled with surprises throughout.
Happy New Year everyone!
Be sure to stop back next week when we’ll properly ring in 2009 with some excellent material from 1968, 1972 and 1977. See you then.

Ted
Ted,
I wouldn't have made the nasty remark if u didn't post an anti comment about me just saying same ol boring stuff, if you u don't agree with me , just keep it to yourself & i won't make a nasty comment. Also my remark about free speech had to do with your original remark about me saying SAME OL BORING STUFF.....not the nasty comment, so now AGAIN lets move on.
Went to a deadnet party

Bob is grateful - what for?
Grateful for what - free speech as long as it is his and not another's free speech? I refer to: ..."if you u don't agree with me , just keep it to yourself & i won't make a nasty comment..."
It's amusing that remarks have to do with being bored with PITB on one hand, and on the other with the COMMENT in re PITB, again, being boring. Does anyone else find this - ahem - BORING? And at least a little bit tiresome? "...what I want to know is...are you kind?"
I do not wish to harvest wind (hence I do not plant ice), just maybe opening eyes to old behavior that won't serve us in the New Year! Peace out, DtM
Nice way to cap the year

This weeks selections were like an effective session of acupuncture . Fantastic stuff .
Especially the 77 stuff sunflower / rider / china doll . And the monumental post drums on 12 20 1989 . The entire sequence is outrageous .- Especially the O1 , Sat p.m. , and the way the band lands into .. on the moon from the O1
Have an excellent and healthy and stress free 2009

There is nothing wrong with being critical.
Deadheads have been critical and bitchin for decades. In its in our blood. I remember the complaints about Donna, Bobby's playin the same cowboy songs, Keith is sleeping through entire tours, can't get tickets, gate-crashers, too many newbies, etc.
Its what makes us special, because we loved the band and the music. We wanted everything to be perfect.
That said, there is no need and no room for personal attacks or infantile language.
Keep up the good work DL. You will never please all of us, but that is OK. And all of you complainers, keep complaining! It is your duty as Deadheads, and it makes for lively discussions.
"Let there be songs to fill the air."
pomo1, Truth revealed & well spoken!
That made me smile. Thanks!
The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.
me too!
well put!
Funny
The funny part about all you Deadheads that complained so much over the years is what almost drove me from the scene!! I couldn't run fast enough from you people, always finding something to complain about!! Guess you just can't really be happy anywhere. Well, you can all huddle in your huts and keep on complaining amongst yourselves. The other positive Deadheads are welcome into my camp anytime. Yes, there are often complaints and disagreements, but you constant complainers bring nothing positive to the table except bringing others down!!!
