Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to our continuing holiday editions of the Tapers’ Section. This week we have some New Year’s themed music, although not all from New Year’s Eve, but from the time around then.

Our first stop will be the magnificent concert on 12/29/77, a life-changing night for a lot of Dead Heads with whom we’ve spoken. This, of course, featured the return of China>Rider after a three-plus year absence. From that magical night, we have the centerpiece of the night, Playing In The Band>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>China Doll>Jam. The rest of this concert is certainly worth seeking out, so do find yourself a copy of Dick’s Picks Vol. 10 and enjoy it.

Next up, from 10 years plus a day later on 12/30/89, we have the post-Drums sequence of I Will Take You Home>The Other One>Standing On The Moon>One More Saturday Night, Baby Blue, which is every bit the equal of the post-Drums sequences from 12/27&28/89 that we played for you last week here at the Tapers’ Section. Dynamite stuff indeed.

Finally this week, to get you all in the mood for the big New Year’s Eve festivities, we have my all time favourite midnight piece of music from a New Year’s Eve concert, Sugar Magnolia>Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from 12/31/78, the famous Closing of Winterland concert. This was the concert that went on and on and on, filled with surprises throughout.

Happy New Year everyone!

Be sure to stop back next week when we’ll properly ring in 2009 with some excellent material from 1968, 1972 and 1977. See you then.

Feel the Love

Dead Forever

I was actually surprised to see animosity about the Dead and their free offering of music.

As far as the boring comment, I listen to GD everywhere I go, car, work, home. It doesn't matter. I have my particular favorites and have heard nearly every song in their rep. Sure some of it gets repetitive but never boring. With some of the other groups I enjoy you can point to a particular song as your favorite but with the Dead it becomes a particular version and that is what makes them "Grate"r than any other act to come along.

Spent the christmas holiday working in a toy store and playing Pig's version of Run, Run, Rudolph on PA system. Offered anyone who could tell me the artist performing the song their purchase for free and no-one got it right.

Were have all the Heads gone??

April 28th in New Jersey, I will be there

Released Material

I continually have to apologise for being new into the Dead. Find Tapers Section a grate way to be made aware of what music is out there. Thanks for the snippets you provide and the pointers to official releases.

I always loved staying up all night east coast to catch the west coast shows.. i think it was 89 that had the jerry garcia Father Guido Sarducci interview.. midpoint of the show.. jer talking about everything from the the catholic church...he liked latin masses for the wow factor but really only ever dropped in once in a while... to xtra terrestrials..up in the mountains in marin with starships greatest songwriter and jer's best bud Paul Kantner.. a green "i don't know WHAT it was.. thing.. in the woods...."
ahhh fond NON road trip 70s 80s stuff.. but so good to be a dead head those nights...

I'm a wondering if all this shanking and trembling might be from anticipated ticket prices ehhh
I beg for mercy. remember boys, there's a recession.

AS HAPPY AS A MONKEY IN A CAGE WITH BUCHES OF BANANAS

I WAS READING SOME OF THE POSTS AND I AM JUST AS HAPPY AS A MONKEY... THAT THIS MEDIUM EVEN EXISTS TO HEAR THE STUFF RECENTLY RELEASED OR NOT.
I REMEMBER BACK IN THE SUMMER OF NINTY WE WERE AT DEERCREEK, I BELIEVE, NEVER THE LESS WE WERE SPEAKING TO MY FRIEND AND HE JUST PULLED IN FROM THE WEST COAST SHOWS THAT STARTED OFF THAT TOUR. I THINK THEY PLAYED AUTZEN STADIUM WITH A HELP-SLIP-FRANKLINS AND MY FRIEND SEEMED BORED WITH IT AND MY OTHER FRIEND SAID "ARE YOU NUTS, THOSE ARE REAL NUGGETS".
FOR MYSELF I HAVE MORE OF AN APPRECIATION OF THEIR MUSIC NOW THEN EVER BEFORE. SOMETIMES IT'S ALMOST LIKE I HAVENT HEARD ANY OF THE STUFF BEFORE. WHAT I MEAN IS I AM ACTUALLY HEARING ALL OF THE INTRICACIES AND DETAILS MAYBE MORE NOW THAN WHEN I ACTUALLY HEARD IT. LET'S JUST CALL IT EVOLUTION, WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE I AM REALLY LIKE THAT LITTLE MONKEY I MENTIONED EARLIER. "THANK YOU FOR A REAL GOOD TIME" WOULD BE IN STORE.
IN THE WORDS OF FORREST GUMP "AND THAT'S ALL I GOT TO SAY ABOUT THAT".
HAVE A GREAT AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR AND LET'S ALL SMILE BECAUSE "THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN".
SINCERELY,
JOE
