Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from 1978, 1979 and 1981.

Our first stop this week is the start of the second set from 5/13/78 at the Philadelphia Spectrum on the excellent second leg of the Spring Tour of 1978 Playing-In-The-Band","displayWindow","toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,width=300,height=50"); return false' class="audiotemp">Bertha>Good Lovin', Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band.

Next is the end of the second set from 5/12/79 in Amherst, MA, featuring the entire second set jam (with a couple of repeats from our previous selection): Terrapin Station > Playing In The Band > Drums > Space > Not Fade Away> Stella Blue > Good Lovin'. This was Brent’s first tour with the Grateful Dead.

Lastly this week, we have music from 5/11/81 in New Haven, CT, where we have the start of the show, featuring New Minglewood Blues > Sugaree > El Paso ; Jack-A-Roe ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Row Jimmy.

5/12/79: Definitely not a Dicks Picks

Surprisingly, Dick Latvala was not very fond of 5/12/79, and 5/11/79. I read an online blog article about Dick, which discusses his career as the Dead archivist. Apparently, he was on a mission to get every great show, until he heard the above mentioned ones from Amherst and Billerica, respectively. Then and there, he decided that he no longer needed every Dead show. However, it is not mentioned why he didn't like those two shows. I'm still shocked about this because I dig those shows, and enjoy the jam that David Lemieux presented to us above. Here is the text of the article: As Latvala came into contact with more traders, by the late ‘70s he was able to have tapes of every tour sent to him. As Bob Wagner said, “He would get every show. Barry Glassberg and I would send him all the tapes that we made, and everybody else sent him the other tapes.” So Latvala was able to build up quite a collection (“I had hundreds and hundreds of tapes”), although he seems to have had a turning point in 1979. After he got the disappointing tapes of May 11 and 12, 1979, he announced that “he decided he’s no longer an archivist, that he wouldn’t keep every single show anymore.”
