February 9 - February 15, 2015
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning 15 years of Grateful Dead history.
Our first selection is from 11/7/69 from the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, featuring Next Time You See Me, High Time, Good Lovin', China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. There's a cut in the master reel (reel change, actually) during High Times, but otherwise this sounds pretty darn good. The next night, of course, was released as Dick's Picks Vol. 16
From four years later on 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum, we have the end of the first set, featuring Row Jimmy ; Looks Like Rain ; Deal ; El Paso ; Bird Song ; Playing In The Band. It's always the sign of a great show from this era when the first set featured both of the big first set jamming songs (Bird Song and Playing).
Lastly this week, from City Island in Harrisburg, PA on 6/23/84, we have the start of the first set featuring Alabama Getaway > The Promised Land ; Peggy-O ; Little Red Rooster ; Brown Eyed Women ; My Brother Esau. There were quite a few really good shows on the summer tour of 1984, running right through the Ventura shows later in July.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.
For sure I would expect more from this show. Most likely this piece
Big Railroad Blues
The Music Never Stopped (very nice)
Don't Ease Me In
-- I can't remember who is on the tape in between sets. But I think it's James Brown clip
Touch of Grey

Well, now I have managed to listen to a bit of the City Island show, and it confirms my memory! Jerry sounds, quite frankly, awful! Vocals out of tune, and worse still, out of time. He gets the chords wrong on Alabama, his phrase structure, usually his great strength, is ragged, he sounds totally wasted, and not in a good sense! I know, I am gonna be called a hater, ragged on, whatever, but this sure sounds like an off-night, by any standards, to me!
Thanks for the previously unheard 1984 soundboard. Based on trend, we'll hear more of this in the coming weeks in either the Jam of the Week or Taper's Section. Either one would be most welcome. Something about this makes me long for bike trips in the Black River State Forest. Can't wait! Thanks again Dead.net.
....to have, in particular, this '73 Birdsong in such great sound, cheers! I must say, the two shows at City Island were, as a group, I think the WORST I ever saw at one venue! I am not making any general comments about early vs. middle, vs. late Dead, the place had very bad karma (just down river from Six Mile Island and the near melt-down), bad sound, bad shows, just kinda bad all around. But, hey, maybe others have different memories than I!
thx for the healthy dose of 9/7/73
would love as much of 3/16/73 as possible !
Same 6 songs I had posted on Dave's 13 thread a few days ago. Super 6 pack
