Grateful Dead

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Greetings, and welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some music from 1969 and 1977, two mighty fine years in the Grateful Dead world.

Our first stop this week is on 4/22/69, the middle night of a three night run at Ark in Boston. Some of master reels from this run of shows have a harsh squeal that hinders listening, but not this segment featuring Sitting On Top of World, Morning Dew, BIODTL, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. Not that the very start of Sitting On Top Of The World is clipped from the master reels.

Next up is music from the magnificent Spring Tour of 1977, from the third night of the tour and first of three shows in Passaic, NJ on 4/25/77, featuring the heart of the second set, Terrapin Station > Playing In The Band > Drums> Wharf Rat>Playing In The Band, U.S. Blues. Terrapin was still very new, but was fitting in extremely well, played at most stops on the tour.

Lastly this week, from just a few days later on the first of a five night run at the Palladium in New York on 4/29/77, we have another big second set jam, featuring The Wheel>Wharf Rat>Around, Uncle John's Band, with that last song being the encore.

Be sure to stop back next week for more great tunes, including music from 1969, 1971 and 1983, a nice span of some fine Grateful Dead. And as always, we welcome and encourage you to write to us at the e-mail address below.

gotta love the 77 sound

so clear and beautiful.

It would have been fun to see (and hear) them back then (my first show was in 82).

Hmmm, 4/25 circulates on a muddy SBD and 4/29 only circulates as an AUD.

jogged old memories....

of those wonderful Palladium shows, with Phil and Jerry playing with the acoustics of the place, Phil rocking the roof, and Jerry bouncing crystilline riffs off the walls. Ah, to be young again! Thanks, a week of all pure gold!
