July 23 - July 29, 2012
Greetings. This week we have music spanning eight years of Grateful Dead history, 1973 to 1981.
Our first stop this week is in Evanston, IL, where we have the big jam featuring Morning Dew>Playing In The Band>Uncle John's Band>Playing In The Band. A week later, on 11/10/73, this would be tweaked to become Playing>UJB>Dew>UJB>Playing, which they'd again play on 11/17/73 and finally on 3/23/74.
Next up is the long sequence pre-Drums from 11/26/80 in Pembroke Pines, FL, the first show after the five week run of acoustic/electric shows at the Warfield and Radio City that ended on 10/31/80. From this show we have Cold Rain and Snow, Samson and Delilah, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World.
Lastly this week from 12/9/81 in Boulder, CO, we have the start of the second set, featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain>Estimated Prophet>He's Gone>Jam. Although this is from the PA mix, you might notice the sound is a little more full and robust, and that's owing to the fact that this November-December, 1981 tour was recorded to reel-to-reel rather than cassette masters, the only tour aside from Fall Tour 1976 for which the PA feed was recorded to reel-to-reel (generally reels 1969-1979 were mixed specifically for the tape, not simply pulling a PA feed). There's a cut in the master reel during Scarlet Begonias.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.
