Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and a Happy July 4th!

Our first selection this week is from 7/3/84 in Kansas City, where we have the end of the second set, featuring Space>Wheel>Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away; Day Job. As this is from the Beta PCM master, don't be surprised if you hear a drop out or two. Most of the PCMs sound terrific, but they are prone to occasional drop outs.

Next is the entire first set from the penultimate show at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland on 2/6/89, with a very cool opener of Not Fade Away (preceded by a nice tuning Beer Barrel Polka) and a load of other great tunes: Not Fade Away ; Sugaree > Wang Dang Doodle ; Jack-A-Roe ; Queen Jane Approximately ; Brown Eyed Women ; Cassidy ; Tennessee Jed. A strange way to end a set, too.

Lastly this week is music from the first night of the year-opening run in Oakland on 2/25/90, made up of the bulk of the first set: Little Red Rooster ; Stagger Lee ; Queen Jane Approximately ; The Last Time ; Cassidy ; Deal. These shows, like so much of the second half of 1989 and the spring tour of 1990, were recorded to 24 track tape, so a proper live album might be produced from them some day.

Join us next week for more great music from the Grateful Dead's vault. And feel free to write to us with questions, comments or suggestions, sent to the email address below.
