    June 10 - June 16, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll cover 14 years in Grateful Dead history, 1979, 1984 and 1993.

From Brent Mydland's third-ever show with the Grateful Dead, and the Dead's first-ever appearance at the Hampton Coliseum, on 5/4/79, we have Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World. Even from this early in Brent's tenure with the Dead, you could hear that he was a perfect fit.

Next up is the start of the second set from 4/23/84 in New Haven, featuring Iko Iko, Lost Sailor>Saint Of Circumstance>Uncle John's Band>Only A Fool>Jam. It's always fun for us to play a song we've never played here, and Only A Fool qualifies in that category, I think. This tune, and the Jam that follows, features just Brent with the drummers.

Our last stop this week is in Albany, NY, on 3/28/93, the middle night of a three night run at the Knickerbocker Arena. From this excellent show, we have the end of the second set, featuring Long Way To Go Home>Attics Of My Life>Turn On Your Lovelight. Attics Of My Life was quite rare by 1993, even more so in the ballad slot of the second set. Cool stuff. There was a lot of really good music played on the Spring Tour of 1993, including great stuff during this Albany run.

Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to join us next week here at the Tapers' Section. As always, we encourage you to write to us at the email address below.

    GD84!!!
My mind tends to go to pre-80 GD, but GD84 never ceases to impress me. This selection is mighty fine. Brent, we hardly knew ye. Brent really was awesome on the keys (even though i didn't like his showboating that started up in 87 or 88.) Interestingly, we have a Brentwood piano at home, and we used to live across from the Keith apartments. Thank you Brent for being awesome. RIP, bruddah.

    That estimated is ...
about as good as it gets. Typical 79' high energy, complete w/a totally insane, over the top Jerry solo. I had to stop what I was doing .. Just what I needed to hear after a good long day at work!

Thanks for posting this clip... It may not live up to my memory of the show but just thinking about that night brings back Deep Space memories! Bob was sick this night so Jerry and Brent made up for it. Ahh, the dynamics of a band.

There is a lot of gold in the 80s shows... I started following in the 80s, right before the hit with TOG... now in My 40s I listen every day on XM and check the Taper section each week... I remember waiting on friends to fly home (from Cali) for Xmas, and checking out their "west" coast bootlegs as I had all My East friends could supply.. Now the internet makes it a click away... I remember getting a BAD version of Jerry and Grismans "Pizza Tapes"at an early 90s show... and thinking I found Gold.. what a blast the internet.. I relive shows and take Tours from before My time... :-)

New Haven, what a town! And what a smokin' pair of shows! That Sailor/Saint left a lasting impression on me that night. "the rain fallin down..." I recall the parking garage was on top of the coliseum... with a pair of these tight one-car-wide spiral ramps... one for going up, the other for traffic going down. Somehow we started up the down ramp and didn't realize it until we were fully committed, about halfway. In a full size Chevy Blazer no less. Don't ask me how, but miraculously we made it to the top unscathed, having encountered no down-bound traffic- that could've been ugly. Sometimes heaven does help the fools. And one of the best cheeseburgers I ever ate in my life was at a little hole-in-the-wall diner a few blocks from the coliseum.
