Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1969, 1980 and 1985.

Our first stop this week is at the beautiful Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on 12/19/69, where we have a batch of new, Workingman's Dead-to-be songs, as well as two Pigpen-sung classics: Mason's Children, Black Peter, Hard To Handle, Cumberland, Casey Jones, Good Lovin'.

Next up is music from 12/13/80 in Long Beach, CA, where we have the post-Drums sequence of Not Fade Away>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia, One More Saturday Night. The shows in November and December, 1980, after the long runs at the Warfield and Radio City, were for the most part excellent.

Lastly this week is the post-Drums sequence from 11/8/85 in Rochester, NY, including a couple of relative rarities in She Belongs To Me and Satisfaction. The Other One>I Need A Miracle>She Belongs To Me>Sugar Magnolia, Satisfaction. This was very nearly my first show, but instead I stayed back in Ottawa, celebrating my birthday by being mugged.

Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from deep within the vault.

Just another thing we can add to the list that are FUBARed around here. Personally, I blame it on the chinese spam (which honestly kinda freaks me out). At least, there are still a bunch of entirely cool things to balance everything out.

Almost...

I had several almost first shows. The first was in the fall of 1980 when in my freshman year at Clark U. Worcester two guys wanted to sell me tickets for $75(face value $25) and I had to drive them to NYC and back. I was not that familiar with the band or the music so I passed. Radio city October 1980!! The next shows were not one but 2-3 shows in the spring of 1981. My roomate invited me to his home on Long Island to celebrate the end of freshman year in style. The day before we were to leave I was notified that I had won the freshman science award and was invited to do research that summer. I passed on the TRIP and stayed in Worcester like a good boy. Nassau May 1981. Three times the charm and in the fall of 1981 I made it to Bethlehem PA for my first show. A dead head was born:) Lehigh 1981.
Now i'm going to listen to the Grate music you post here.
THANKS

Well, if I had to be mugged

I'd rather be mugged in Ottawa. It IS a beautiful city, ehh? You bunch of hosers!

And, by the way, nice picks this week. Keep'em coming. We do appreciate your acumen.

That's right... I forgot about that!
Still got that bumpersticker around here somewhere...

Continuing in the "Never a bad show in Rochester" vein, I am reminded that Furthur played a killer show at Highland Bowl back in 2010...

Happy Pi Day, everyone...!

1985 "Trouble Ahead" Tour

Remember this was the "trouble ahead, Jerry's in red!" tour. Saw both Richmond shows (11/1 & 11/2) and it rained so hard and long I thought we'd float away.

After witnessing a fantastic show at the Fab Fox Theatre in Atlanta in April of 80, I was more than excited to see them again during the November southern tour and they did not dissapoint. Fred G. I totallly agree, but don't forget that Lakeland show either sandwiched between the two you mentioned, another teriffic show musically. I remember back then alot of heads avoided the Lakeland Civic Center due to massive police presence, both uniformed and undercover, in fact, many were busted in the parking lot that nite, which led to the Dead only playing there one more time. I was also fortunate to see the fall 85 tour in Tampa just a couple of weeks before this gem from Rochester, at the time, the boys were pulling out a lot of oldies and She Belongs to Me was one of them, along with Lovelite sung by Bobby and Jerry's Comes a Time, which hadn't been in the rotation for years.

what a great choice, xo!
The Grateful Dead sound Awesome!

She's got everything she needs
She's an artist, she don't look back
She's got everything she needs
She's an artist, she don't look back
She can take the dark out of nighttime
And paint the daytime black.

You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees.

She never stumbles
She's got no place to fall
She never stumbles
She's got no place to fall
She's nobody's child
The Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks
She's a hypnotist collector
You are a walking antique.

Bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her when her birthday comes
Bow down to her on Sunday
Salute her when her birthday comes
For Halloween buy her a trumpet
And for Christmas, give it a drum.

Happy 12th of March in the Year 2012
We now have MORE day!
