May 16- May 22, 2011
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section where this week we'll have Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1977 and 1991.
We'll stop first on 8/12/72 in Sacramento, CA, the start of a great month, and really a great few months of Grateful Dead music. The Dead in 1972 were in do-no-wrong mode, and starting with Europe, and even the Academy of Music shows before Europe, the band was on one of its most consistently great runs in its history. From Sacto, we have Greatest Story Ever Told ; Ramble On Rose ; Beat It On Down The Line ; He's Gone > Drums > The Other One > Black Peter > The Other One; Truckin'; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Sugar Magnolia.
From an equally great period for the Grateful Dead, the first six months of 1977, we have this fineDancing In The Street>Mojo>Dancing In The Street from 4/22/77 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, the opening night of what may consider to be one of the top three or four tours the band ever played.
Lastly this week we have some mighty fine tunes from the final night of the three night run at Shoreline in August, 1991, on 8/18/91 featuring China Doll>GDTRFB>Throwing Stones>NFA, Brokedown Palace. This is the version of the band featuring Vince and Bruce on keyboards/piano, filling the sound with many fine layers and textures.
Stop by next week for more great tunes from deep within the Grateful Dead's archive. As always, we encourage you to write to us with questions or comments, sent to the email address below. That '72 selection is really strong. During the GSET Garcia's guitar sounds like it is spinning like a top. The good drum solo and some impassioned vocals are more reasons to give this show some more attention.
The Dancin'-Mojo is really fun, too. This was really nice to hear during a tough day at work yesterday.
Always wanted to hear one of them and this show in particular. Great picks this week. Really consistent excellency the last few weeks in the picks DL

4/22/77 also has an outstanding PITB.
Only kvetch: play the pre-drums of 8/18/91. I don't need to hear ANOTHER Throwing Stones.
Polish my car, too, please.

What a powerful Truckin! Preceded by a wild Black Peter sandwich: Out of and back into the Other One. The audio clip does end after Bobby says "Relax...", prior to Half Step as mentioned by Clifton Jones. Thanks, DL for the good music!
"Mississippi Half-step" and "Sugar Mag" appear to be missing from the first tranch.
Thanks for the prodigious dose of Dead this week, David! I've been loving the large chunks of music you've been spewing out on this here site. Keep up the good work!!
