Grateful Dead

May 2 - May 8, 2011

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

This week we're going to check in with a similar range of Grateful Dead music as we did last week, which is to say 1973, 1988 and 1990.

Our first selection this week of the second show in Williamsburg, VA on 9/12/73, featuring Weather Report Suite, Around and Around, Eyes Of The World> Stella Blue, Beat It On Down The Line, Casey Jones, Encore One More Saturday Night. The head of Eyes is clipped due to a reel change, but there's some fine music in this sequence. As with last week's clip from the 9/11/73 show, that's Joe Ellis and Martin Fierro on horns

From the final night of the four-night run at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, on 9/6/88, we have the entire first set, featuring Jack Straw ; Desolation Row ; West L.A. Fadeaway ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Cumberland Blues ; Stagger Lee ; Cassidy ; Deal. The odd placement of Desolation Row as the both the second song of the show and being a Bob tune following a Bob tune is because Jerry had broken a string and spent a few minutes fixing it while Bob led the band through a nice, mellow Desolation Row.

Finally this week is music from the end of Vince Welnick's first-ever show on 9/7/90 in Richfield, OH featuring I Need A Miracle>Black Peter>Lovelight, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. A fitting encore for Brent.

Be sure to stop by next week for more good music from the vault. We'll be digging deep next week we expect. As always, we encourage you to write to us with questions or comments.

Joshua me, have you heard

Joshua me, have you heard (from 73):

6/10
2/9
2/15
11/11
3/16

if not, listen to those soon.

^ I probably have heard some of them over the years, but '73 has never been a "go to" year for me for what ever reason. I'll have to check them out.

I'm currently rediscovering '76, for some reason. Sometime years just "call out" to you for whatever reason....

sorry, but...

that saxophone on WRS...argh. My 9-year old daughter was aghast.

That said, 9/11/73 is a fine show. in the 2nd set, I usually just skip to Dark Star. The first set has a tasty China Rider and Playin.

Why can't we get paid to listen to GD all the time?

looking forward to hearing the 88, even though it is ANOTHER 88 first set (I like Desolation Row).

The Wind and Rain....

Interesting jam coming out of that '73 WRS. Like others have said, I've always avoided those "horn section" shows like the plague. I'm not sure why... If anything, the jamming is a bit "Bitch's Brew -esque", and there's certainly nothing wrong with that...

A nice Eyes, as well. There's SO much I haven't heard from '73.
