May 9 - May 15, 2011
This week at the Tapers' Section we'll stick to the Grateful Dead's first 15 years, with music from 1969, 1972 and 1980.
Our first stop this week is on 8/29/69 at the Family Dog in San Francisco, where the band played several new songs that would be released on Workingman's Dead in June, 1970. From this show, we have Casey Jones, Easy Wind, Me and My Uncle>High Time, New Orleans>Searchin>Good Lovin', Dire Wolf, King Bee. please note that there is cut in good lovin' due to a reel change. also, good lovin' is sung by jerry, not pigpen, and is only the fourth live version by the dead (two were played in 1966, and this is the second of 1969).
Next up is a unique second set jam from 10/18/72 in st. louis, the middle night of a three night run at the fox, featuring Playing In The Band>Drums>Dark Star>Morning Dew>Playing In The Band, Deal, Promised Land. Good stuff indeed.
Lastly this week is music from 8/30/80 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, featuring the start of the second set: Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, CC Rider>Ramble On Rose, Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World. Unfortunately, the first set of this show is missing from the vault, but thankfully the second set remained.
Stop by next week for more great music from deep within the vault. We have some good stuff planned over the next few weeks.
Well, I have not been crabby for a while! First we get great early Dead, vital, experimental roots music. Then a wonderful, probing, telepathic '72 jam that unfolds with an internal logic both seemingly inevitable and mysterious. Then we get Philly '80, I show I was at, which is wholly forgettable. Boring first set. A Scarlet-Fire in which Jerry alternates between sounding lost and hysterical,C. C. Rider which one can only assume that a sober Jerry would never have allowed Bob to so badly butcher night after night, the usual high speed late Eyes, and a Black Peter to drive ya to the lot early. It is not actually a bad show for '80, but listening to the three selections in sequence you cannot but hear a band running on fumes, and rather toxic fumes at that.
Well, I got that off my chest!
Great stuff these Philly shows. Loved the hell out of 08/29/80 show, in the mid 80's I played this tape till it broke. Hey DL2, how about a Road Trip of the complete 08/29th show with 08/30 set 2 as the filler.
Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On 72 Discs!

great song selection for 8/30/80. Jerry shreds on Fire.
The other two shows' awesomenesses speak for themselves. Look at the dates and song lists. my-tee-fine.
Where did jam of the week go?
That is some tasty goodness from 72. A fantastic way to begin a week. Thanks for the 80, as I need to spend more time with that year. Always love a Scarlet-Fire. Many thanks for bringing this to us week after week as this is a fantastic box of treasure. First thing I do on Monday is check Dead.net! Take care all and have a great week.
The second set open from the show at The Spectrum

All looks delicious!
Can't wait to wake up a little better and give a listen. Will be a nice break in my day visiting NYC from Oakland.
