Just like your favorite jam, things are going to get a bit funky on Dead.net over the next week or so. Community accounts will be temporarily closed October 16th-17th and may be under further maintenance through October 22nd. But rest assured, we will be back up and better than ever shortly thereafter. Stay tuned!
November 27 - December 03, 2017
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have some excellent Grateful Dead music from 1973, 1984 and 1985.
From the final night of the second leg of the Fall Tour of 1973, from 11/1/73 in Evanston, IL, we have this sequence of Morning Dew > Playing In The Band> Uncle John's Band > Playing In The Band. This is sort of the precursor of the sequence they’d play a week later at Winterland on 11/10/73, the famous Playing>Uncle John’s>Dew>Uncle John’s>Playing musical palindrome they’d play three times (11/10/73, 11/17/73, and 3/23/74).
Next up is the very cool sequence of Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance ; Wharf Rat > Gimme Some Lovin' from 11/2/84 at the Berkeley Community Theatre, including a rare pre-Drums Wharf Rat, and the first Gimme Some Lovin’ by the Dead.
Lastly this week is the start of the second set from 11/5/85 at the Worcester Centrum, where we have Shakedown Street ; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Ship Of Fools > Supplication > Playin' Reprise > Don't Need Love.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
Was at both these, from the UK, then from IV, Santa Barbara! Awsome timz...
Reliving it now!
Reliving it now!
I was there too. I went nuts.
I was at the show and this portion up until space was epic. When the band broke into Gimme Some Lovin the place went Bezerkely. Everyone had expected drums and space after Sailor/Saint... then certainly after Wharf Rat but Gimme Some Lovin ... (First time played). Plus please tell me when the last time was that Phil had sung lead! It was a joyous madhouse in a wonderful venue.
Have to check my tapes of the show, it was memorable but not for the mistake you highlight, although it is clear on this recording. The rest of the show did not reach that peak again but I loved all of those shows.
Did anyone hear the mess up at the end of slipknot into Franklin's.Jerry went to end it then the band had to cover Jerry's mistake. Real obvious at the 10.32 mark. Very interesting, check it out 11/2/84 above. Bob and Jerry are so off it's funny. HA HA!
Gotta love Fall of '73. Don't believe I have heard this whole show but it is going to get queued up promptly
