Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll have a double dose of 1982 Grateful Dead music, and a nice piece from 1990.

Our first stop this week is on 4/14/82 at the Glens Falls Civic Center in upstate NY, previous home to the Adirondack Red Wings and current home to the Adirondack Phantoms AHL teams. From this show, we have the second set opening sequence of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Playing In The Band.

Next is the end of the second set from the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on 5/23/82, featuring The Other One>Stella Blue>I Need A Miracle>Casey Jones. This was one of only two versions of Casey Jones in 1982.

Lastly this week we have the end of the show from the first night of a three night run at Cal Expo in June, 1990, on 6/8/90, featuring the end of the show: Space>The Wheel>I Need A Miracle>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia, US Blues. As we noted a couple of weeks ago, this was the first of three weekends of great show, here, the next weekend at Shoreline and the June 23-24 weekend in Eugene (great shows and loads of fun!).

Join us next week for more great music from deep within the vault.

Wow, pretty bad china-rider, they blew it majorly out of the end jam before the transition to R. Had to shut it down after a minute of playin, bob sounds awful.
Common to hear their singing and lyrics way off in this era, but when J's playing is sub-par, they must've been very F'd up. Late 82' is one of my favorite and strongest periods IMO. Glens Falls was probably just an easy place to do a lot of drugs for them.

Hey Gerry!

Don't kid yourself dude, it's all downhill from here. The receding hairline is a motherfucker and instead of skinny there is fat with diabetes.

But you know what dude? I just went and did myself a whole Furthur tour out West and it really made me feel good but old at the same time. Good that I can still boogie my ass off when the band creates the mood, old that I can't wang dang doodle all night long anymore.

Love yer handle, keep posting!

Finally gets the place he deserves, in the Europe '72 box set, where at last he is properly mixed in. A fine and driving rock 'n roll pianist, something I feel I cannot say about Brent. Jeff C another.

Birthday and '82

Hey yes, Happy Birthday Dave! Hmmm... what do you give the guy who has everything?

What's not to love about these '82 delights? (and what I've heard from the year in general, admittedly not enough). Fat ropey guitar from Jerry, organic sounding keys from Brent (a nice change from the plinky sound, though I like that too). And the way Brent sings the "cocaine" harmony on Casey Jones. This version of the Other One is a real eye opener, spacey in the best way, and the Stella is a delicate as they come. Wow.

And now I'm listening to the China>Rider on earphones, oh my goodness.

So let's see, it's Dave's birthday, and he's giving US these gifts.

re the missing history

I have it on good authority that it's coming back, honest. Do not be unduly concerned, and happy listening to the tunes that are here now...
