Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’re going to check out music from 1981, 1982, and 1989, a plethora of Brent-era Dead.

Our first selection this week is from 8/14/81 in Seattle, when we have a bit of a different sequence featuring Playing In The Band>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. This comes on the heels of playing the Playing>Rider from 8/5/89 here at the Tapers’ Section, an even more different sequence.

Next, from a year later on 7/28/82 at Red Rocks, we have a second sequence of Althea, Let It Grow, He's Gone>Truckin', featuring two songs usually found in the first set in Althea and Let It Grow.

Our final bit of Grateful Dead music this week is the start of the second set from the final show of a three night at Cal Expo on 8/6/89, featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, Samson and Delilah, Ship Of Fools, Man Smart Woman Smarter. This was my first time attending shows at Cal Expo, and because of how great music was, and how much fun I had, it wasn’t the last. What a great place.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes form the vault.

Correct me if i'm wrong...

...but this is a taper's tape. No one should be prominent in the mix, such as Phil's bass on SSDD. I can hear Phil's bass pretty good on the '82 material, but I have basic Altec Lansing speakers on the computer. If you have high end audio equipment, you may not be getting the bottom end you think you should? I am certainly no audio expert, so I could be wrong.

oohhh Bobby

Ever since she went and got a sex change?? Thats some good improv right there. I'm not sure but I think the Truckin jams usually ended like that if they led into Drums. So yeah, I'd say it was unique.

Truckin'

I must say, though I'm still rather green compared to the more well traveled listeners around here, I can't recall a Truckin' quite like the one here from Red Rocks 7/28/82. Was that ending jam customary, or a bit unique? I'd like to know, as one who's still learning & catching up on all the many shows past. Thought it was cool & wish we could here more of where that jam went following the fade.

this weeks selections...

.....I like! (surprised?) I was off the bus by Cal Expo show, but was at this Red Rocks show, which , I recall in a very hazy way, as having been a blast! (spent the day rafting on the Colorado river with a rafting crew that I trading tickets to the show for the trip, and did so for subsequent Red Rocks shows, was a great way to spend the days during the shows!)

Cal Expo!!!

Was at the Expo shows in '89 as well. Never made it back there, but what a wonderful set of shows. Good times with Good people. How about releasing these Dave? I known they are in the vault somewhere. Go for It!! We will not be disappointed.

everything's like brand new! (again)

Thanks for fixing it. They kind of cut that space jam midstream to kind of non sequitor into China Cat. Pretty satisfying overall, but it's too bad they didn't go into a Dark Star like they did NYE that year.
