October 14 - October 20, 2013
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’re going to check out music from 1981, 1982, and 1989, a plethora of Brent-era Dead.
Our first selection this week is from 8/14/81 in Seattle, when we have a bit of a different sequence featuring Playing In The Band>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. This comes on the heels of playing the Playing>Rider from 8/5/89 here at the Tapers’ Section, an even more different sequence.
Next, from a year later on 7/28/82 at Red Rocks, we have a second sequence of Althea, Let It Grow, He's Gone>Truckin', featuring two songs usually found in the first set in Althea and Let It Grow.
Our final bit of Grateful Dead music this week is the start of the second set from the final show of a three night at Cal Expo on 8/6/89, featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, Samson and Delilah, Ship Of Fools, Man Smart Woman Smarter. This was my first time attending shows at Cal Expo, and because of how great music was, and how much fun I had, it wasn’t the last. What a great place.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes form the vault.
we are working on this. Sorry for the hassle, but stay tuned...
hi, it's bobby's birthday and the current tapers' section won't play -- what's up with that? would love to hear this stuff! was at cal expo.
we're experiencing technical difficulties, and working on it...
The links aren't playing. iPhone Safari's. Thanks for any and all assitance.
But: Playin'>China Cat wasn't all that rare. The full suite of Let It Grow, never mind just the meat, was played extensively in '73, not to mention other years. Althea crept in to the 2nd set most often in the early 80s. And: Whether it be 8/4; 8/5; or 8/6, whether it be Cal Expo or the Kaiser or the Shoreline or the Greek -- The Grateful Dead ripped it up when Sirius, The Dog Star, was closest to Earth and they were playing in the Bay Area.
Does anybody know what the connection is with the Grateful Dead and Sirius? Does it have anything to do with Robert Anton Wilson and The Cosmic Trigger? Just kidding about the last comment but seriously -- is there a connection through the pyramids in Egypt or the eye in the triangle? I'd be interested in any serious conjecture on the subject...
I am thinking of this because of the Playin'>Rider>Terrapin from Cal Expo on 8/5/89, I think.
looks like unwanted text creeping in. I'll see if we can fix it. Thanks!
It seems the songs featured this week are accurate if the first four are removed from each selection- Promised/Sugaree/Jack/China Cat. Only an audience copy of the 81 show circulates. ***edit...And it's fixed- Thanks!
