October 28 - November 3, 2013
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from a short period in Grateful Dead history, early in Brent’s tenure with the band, with selections this week from 1979, 1981 and 1982.
Our first tracks this week are from 9/6/79, the final night of a three night run at Madison Square Garden, with music from the second set featuring Ramble On Rose, Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band.
From two years later, we have music recorded live in Seattle on 8/14/81, with the sequence of music coming out of Space. Other One tease>Playing In The Band reprise>Wharf Rat>I Need A Miracle>GDTRFB>Johnny B. Goode. That’s a pretty well-developed Other One jam to start things off, but which they soon abandon before it becomes a full-blown Other One, in preference of heading back into Playing In the Band.
From another year later, on 8/8/82 at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI, we have the start of the second set, featuring Far From Me>Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain. That’s a very rare Far From Me set opener, but very cool nonetheless.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes form the vault.
Was there and it disappeared. The whole first set to 8/6/82 was one of the selections. Hopefully it will reappear as quickly as it vanished.
Didn't happen. I'm pretty sure I commented along with at least 5 others. It somehow got wiped, unless I'm tripping - which could very well be. Are all our memories that short or did they actually miss a whole week without somebody letting them know?
Just getting right...
your contribution is
ever-so appreciated, xo!
1981 in 2013,
I'm rocking, xo!
Love thy neighbor,
play your music loud!
I won't ask where Phil is this time.
Sure wish I could hear him, though.
and then it just got better!
I'm really trippin on this Ramble On Rose.
Really, listen to you guys in the audience. Awesome!!
Jerry feeds off of Brent's energy.
Listen to the CROWD!!!
We love it!
Interesting time period for the band. According to Deadbase, they were on the road after about a months break. A couple shows after the one featured here they were playing MacArthur Court in Eugene. Another interesting tidbit is the recent breakout of Might as Well at the beginning of the August '81 run, where they had it in heavy rotation for several (about 6) shows in a row, either as a set closer or the 2nd set opener. That always stuck out to me when studying set lists or filling out j-cards from this span of shows...
P.S. Thanks Dead.net for getting this posted - - What happened to last week's entry with the St. Paul and MSG stuff?
It's here now, folks. Sorry for the delay!
