Tapers Section By David Lemieux

This week, we’re going to stop into the years of 1980, 1984 and 1989 exclusively, with some great stuff from both years.

First up, from the final night of the Grateful Dead’s 14 night run at the Warfield in San Francisco on October 14, 1980, we have the pre-Drums sequence of Jam>Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band, always a good combination of tunes.

Next, in 1984, the band played an excellent show in Hartford, CT, on October 14. From that night, we have the first set closing sequence of I Need A Miracle>Might As Well, a rather interesting pairing of songs. And from the end of the second set, we have the sequence of China Doll>Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away. Unfortunately, the master recording (on Beta PCM) is cut toward the end of Not Fade Away. However, the sequence is particularly interesting due to the massive amounts of effects Healy put on the voices throughout these three songs. This is about the strongest, most prolonged manipulation of the vocals these ears have ever heard.

Our next stop is in 1989, at the Meadowlands Arena. Of course, the final night of this five night run of shows was immortalized on the 2001 CD release Nightfall of Diamonds, mixed from the beautifully-recorded 24-track analog master tapes. From earlier in the run, we have the pre-Drums sequence of the second set from 10/12/89, featuring Hey Pocky Way>Cumberland Blues>Looks Like Rain>He’s Gone. From the next show, on 10/14/89 (on 10/13/89, Jerry and Bobby appeared on the David Letterman show), we have the first set opening combination of Touch of Grey>Minglewood Blues, both of which are played exceptionally.

Be sure to check back in next week for more great material. As always, we welcome you to write with questions or comments.

Lovely Tunes!

Man, I just love how good old Grateful Dead tunes just refuse to get old or boring. Excellent selections, I always love Terrapin Station.

I am /still/ blown away by the Drums>Slip>Frank>TMNS>Stella>Round&Round from Sept 24 1976 that you posted a few weeks back. I listen to it while I'm cleaning, when I'm in the shower, whenever! A real gem.

There is one combo I'd love to hear, from one of my fav. periods--late 78--it's called "Missisippi Half Step > Franklin's Tower." Do you think you could hit us with one of those in the next few weeks?

Thanks as always Dave!
P.S. to the whiners: We get the point already. And moreover, it's called "Taper's Section" for a reason.

It seems a shame that theres so much music in the vaults that will never get released. The year is almost over and the only offerings were a release meant before last New Years but was delayed until January and a release intended to be released last decade and delayed until July this year. Rhino began their tenure with the Dead full of promise with the initial releases but seems to have come to a complete standstill.

Whats the point of having wishlist topics when there appears to be nothing new being released and no communication about upcoming prospects.

I hate to complain each Monday but having a minimum of 4 new releases featuring unreleased sessions/shows each year would make everyone here happy and not rehashing previously released music either.

Even downloads would be fine. Theres very little overhead in offering paid downloads. I would gladly pay each Monday for downloads I can listen to anywhere other than sitting on a computer all day.

Well said SPACEBROTHER!
All the argument over streaming/MP3s is a distraction from the real issues. The facts:
- The rate of official releases of new material has ground to a virtual standstill.
- Initiatives to repackage old material (Starbucks, games) are fine, but not for longstanding deadheads
-Making new/rare material available in ‘broadcast’ formats to minority audiences (Sirius, streaming TS and GDH) is fine too, but not as a substitute for ‘mainstream’ CD releases/high quality downloads.
- There has been no feedback or even thanks for the excellent suggestions in the relevant forums

I ( and I suspect many others) have run out of ways to ask for regular high quality official issues of good/rare shows from the Vault. People who complain about bad service should not be dismissed as whiners. They have made plenty of eloquent, well argued posts; pointed, but good natured posts; straightforward polite requests. There has been absolutely no constructive response to this from the ‘owners’, so it should be no surprise that some people go over the top.

I sympathise greatly with the mods; being obliged to police us, appease us, endlessly call for patience is no fun I’m sure, but the root problem will not be solved by their valiant efforts or by those who encourage ‘whiners’ to shut up and take what they are given.

Let us not forget that Warner/Rhino are the ‘owners’ of this site and custodians of the vault. They have a responsibility and an accountability. It is absolutely wrong to personally victimise ‘front of house’ people for the behaviour of their employers, but it is not wrong to ask them to pass on reasonable grievances and to solicit feedback on behalf of the customer.

May I therefore respectfully ask all the ‘Front of House’ people who use/administer this site (meaning those employed/contracted one way or another by Rhino/Warner/GDP) to kindly let us know that they have passed on a polite request to Rhino to make clear their plans for Vault releases, to do their best to solicit a helpful response and to share that response with us. I hope you feel able to help with this.

In the meantime a constructive suggestion. Perhaps the mods could create a new forum called ‘Managing the Vault’ for people who want to discuss these issues. It probably won’t make a bit of difference, but it may help separate interesting discussions on Tapers Section material from concerns and frustrations about Vault management. That way we can keep everyone happy/unhappy as they wish!

How about it

Good wishes to all!

great week

i'm surprised by the quality of the '84 material. good job, lemieux! but the amount of music seems a bit paltry by normal standards.

AnotherSellout -

if you can record and play the streams from this site to your iPod, why are you still raging at the machine? I agree that the quality of the streams is lower, however lots of the material here is sourced from analog anyway and if the objective of the site is to provide some rarer material for listening (as opposed to remote distribution of archival material), who cares if the tape artifacts are sampled at 192kbps or 96kbps. If as you say, you are playing them on an iPod then the difference is not so profound as to warrant high blood pressure every Monday morning. Why not enjoy the gift as it is kindly offered?

By the way - I tried nettransport and couldnt get it to work. Perhaps you can post your method for snagging the streams to Tapers/Technical forum.

for the moment, I know no more of impending releases than you do, aside from being assured by people I've always found credible that great stuff is in the works. However, I will pass your well-chosen remarks up the line, and thanks.

Good idea re the topic; I'll get on it.

and grinning like crazy at this week's selections! Woo!!n

I'm with MaryE in that I've heard there is more coming and not too far off, but that's all I've heard. And rest assured that your comments, requests, complaints, and compliments get passed along by the front of the house folks to those who aren't so in the front.
