This week, we’re going to stop into the years of 1980, 1984 and 1989 exclusively, with some great stuff from both years.
First up, from the final night of the Grateful Dead’s 14 night run at the Warfield in San Francisco on October 14, 1980, we have the pre-Drums sequence of Jam>Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band, always a good combination of tunes.
Next, in 1984, the band played an excellent show in Hartford, CT, on October 14. From that night, we have the first set closing sequence of I Need A Miracle>Might As Well, a rather interesting pairing of songs. And from the end of the second set, we have the sequence of China Doll>Throwing Stones>Not Fade Away. Unfortunately, the master recording (on Beta PCM) is cut toward the end of Not Fade Away. However, the sequence is particularly interesting due to the massive amounts of effects Healy put on the voices throughout these three songs. This is about the strongest, most prolonged manipulation of the vocals these ears have ever heard.
Our next stop is in 1989, at the Meadowlands Arena. Of course, the final night of this five night run of shows was immortalized on the 2001 CD release Nightfall of Diamonds, mixed from the beautifully-recorded 24-track analog master tapes. From earlier in the run, we have the pre-Drums sequence of the second set from 10/12/89, featuring Hey Pocky Way>Cumberland Blues>Looks Like Rain>He’s Gone. From the next show, on 10/14/89 (on 10/13/89, Jerry and Bobby appeared on the David Letterman show), we have the first set opening combination of Touch of Grey>Minglewood Blues, both of which are played exceptionally.
Be sure to check back in next week for more great material. As always, we welcome you to write with questions or comments.

Blah Blah Blah - I'myself am talkin about the music here. A whileback I emailed dead.net looking for a sound board nuget from the vault from this show on the tapers section - and i'm listening to it. Fat Jerry licks. Crispy clean. Dan Healy seamed to be F'in with Bobby this night - especially during set II - messing with his voice through the soundbord - listen to the Estimated Prophet from this night if you can find a copy of it for the full effect . A historical note. This show was the next show after the incredible 10/12/84 Augusta ME show. And was one of the longest non-New Years or acoustic/electric show of the 1980's. That's probably why the tape ends during NFA. It ran out of room! Most all the audiance tapes I have hear of this show omit much of the D/S for spacial reasons. I recall the band came very late and played past like 12:00 or 12:30 PM or something. A Lovelight (rare at the time) followed right after the NFA - no real encore. Long hot high energy sets: I - Alabama Getaway-> Greatest Story Ever Told, Dire Wolf, Little Red Rooster, Dupree's Diamond Blues, My Brother Esau, Loser, Minglewood Blues, Row Jimmy, I Need A Miracle-> Might As Well II- China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider-> Samson & Delilah-> High Time, Estimated Prophet-> Eyes Of The World-> Drums-> China Doll-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away-> Turn On Your Love Light. You can say what you want about this period in the Dead's history - but this is the band and "sound" as I personally fell in love with them. Age: 16 - 4th show - I got my tix via some kind of "concert bus" thing. A good seat & round-trip bus ride was like $20. Good times.
Touch> Minglewood
What a beauty. I definitely prefer 70s Minglewoods but this one rips. The Touch Of Grey is great as well. Listening to Space> China Doll> Throwing Stones> NFA right now. Lovely. I'm still a newbie to 80s stuff but I love it. Admittedly it seems a lot less consistent than 70s stuff but the peaks are just as high.
RIPPPING

On my macbook I record every t/s selection as follows, and the results are outstanding, sorry can't advise anyone with a pc.
- download a program called "WireTap" and buy the 'pro' version, it's under $20.
- I have a PreSonus firewire audio interface (cost about $300). the firewire cable goes from the macbook to the box. the box has stereo audio outs, and ins. I run 2 XLR cables from the out of the box to the in of the box.
- the software allows you to record in MP3, AIFF and other options. I record eveything in AIFF, and even though of course you get a much larger file, I have found the sound quality of the AIFF recordings to be FAR superior and much ballsier than the streaming output, once recorded and played back.
This is my experience, I am sure a similar set up with pc gear and software is attainable.
test me test me ......just don't f--in' arrest me ........ like someone said on archive ages ago when they yanked the downloads, just consider the shift to streaming to be an IQ test :: >> )) playing back the recorded playin' from this week's offering right now out of itunes, sounds great ...........

Do you know how I could easily transfer 1800+ hours of top quality tapes to CD or to digital audio somehow? I taped for years, fell away from it, but am now looking to convert my collection to more modern listening and sharing modes. I have some incredible stuff, but it is mostly on Maxell type II's....I know I am dating myself.
