Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section! This week we'll cover a dozen years in Grateful Dead history with music from 1972-1984.

Our first selection is from 7/16/72 in Hartford, where we have first set material made up of Deal, Mexicali, Stella Blue, BIODTL, Cumberland. Please note there are some mix issues on Deal, but all settles down nicely after a while. This is the second-ever version of Stella Blue, the first being on 6/17/72 in Hollywood at Pigpen's final show. That first Stella Blue is worth seeking out as Pigpen adds some soulful organ to the song. There is no board recording, but there are some decent audience tapes out there.

Next is the second set from Dayton, OH on 11/30/81, featuring Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; It Must Have Been The Roses; Estimated Prophet> Eyes Of The World > Drums > Space> The Other One > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia. This is from a reel-to-reel master, although not a mix-to-tape recording (like the Kidd 1973-1974 recordings or more famously the Betty 1976-1978 recordings); rather, it's a PA mix recorded to reel instead of cassette, which was the case for this entire tour.

Next is a classic sequence of Scarlet Begonias>Touch of Grey>Fire On The Mountain>Man Smart (Woman Smarter) from 7/13/84, the show that also featured the last Dark Star until 10/9/89 in Hampton.

Be sure to stop by next week for another dose of Dead from deep within the vault.

7/13/84!

Thanks for putting that sequence up! All-time fave Garcia Scarlet solo w/ JG and Brent lockin it w/ the audience up 'n' over the top. Love the transitions into and out of TOG, love that they went into FOTM anyway! And ignore the haters: Women Are Smarter was a fine fine jamming vehicle for drummers, Phil, and Garcia in the the early to late 80s, this being a fine fine example.

Dayton Ohio = strangest of places

No offense to Ohioans; Dayton just does't have the same ring as "Greek" or "Shoreline" or "MSG".

10/29/77 = hot show. Where? DeKalb, Illinois.

Looking forward to hearing it,

My 3rd show...GA and I stood outside in freezing weather for 3 hours before getting inside. This show also has the only "Mack the Knife"...well a couple of lines and then it was aborted. Great "Might as Well" encore as well. One of my favorite shows of the 59 I attended. Thanks for upping this one.
