    September 5 - September 11, 2011

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and we hope you all had a good labor day weekend. This week we're going to hear music from 11 years of Grateful Dead history, 1973-1984.

Our first selection this week is a batch of first set material from Tempe, AZ on 11/25/73, Promised, Sugaree, BIODTL, Don't Ease, BT Wind, Tennessee, Mexicali, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. This show and the previous one on 11/23 come on the heels of one of the finest two week periods in Grateful Dead history, 11/9-11/21/73.

Next we have music from the tail end of Brent's first year in the band, from UCLA on 11/25/79. Shakedown Street>Bertha, Looks Like Rain, He's Gone>Other One. From that fine show, we have the start of the second set, some of the last Betty Boards recorded. Please note there is a cut in the master reel during Bertha.

Lastly this week of the opening round of tunes from 4/29/84 at Nassau Coliseum, Feel Like A Stranger ; Friend Of The Devil ; C C Rider. We don't play too much 1984 Dead here, but this segment sounds pretty good, drawn from the cassette masters.

Join us next week for more great tunes from the vault.

aw, c'mon David - why tease us with the opening notes of Bird Song? That '84 stuff sounded real good, I bet the Bird Song is too...is there a time limit on the Tapers Section material? Thanks for the steady stream of quality GD every week :) Zeb

Great Other One jam!! Knowing they're ultimately heading to drums/space seems to allow them the freedom to go for the kind of way out there spaces I've been hearing on a certain box set this week....but rarely heard them visit in latter-day Other Ones (though I always loved them anyway). Cool to hear the band actually using the song as a truly exploratory vehicle at this stage.
