As a freelance timber cruiser, I used to arrange my work schedule around the Dead shows that I could attend. I preferred to function as a Flintstone rather than a Jetson. My work kept me in the forest and out of the office. A knee injury has required re-training, and I joined the modern world of computers in 2008. Since then I have received my Bachelor's Degree (Applied Science) in June, 2010. I would check this site periodically, but schoolwork and shows kept me busy. I am grateful to be a part of the online world. As I read the previous postings, I realize that I was not present in the strangest of places. I hope to learn from this; and I hope to look at it right. As I continue to revise my documentation files, I will continue to post them to: 30daysofdead.weebly.com I added a chronology page on December 3rd. Who's going to San Francisco for Furthur?

As far as the best RTs...I'd zero in on 2.2 (2/14/68) and 3.3 (5/15/70). Probably since the material is rarer in the context of all the other releases. By that criteria, 2.4 (cal expo 93) would also be worthy, but that's only if you really dig the anything post '91. No bonus disc is a downer, though. I don't think the Road Trips are that good of a value...I'd go for the commercial multi-track stuff first since the recordings are better, and the prices are generally lower on a per disc basis. You can find several of the Dick's Picks and multitrack releases on amazon.com for less than what they sell for here, usually with FSSS. (I see that 2FTV and 3FTV are going for $14 each right now). This might help you find releases in years and periods that please your ear: http://deaddisc.com/GDFD_Dead_By_Date.htm HTH

allmusic.com has pretty good reviews for nearly anything official - tabs for main albums and compilations - checkout the review for DP v4; http://www.allmusic.com/album/dicks-picks-vol-4-r233136/review. But it is always good to hear from the real people right here.

Maybe you should not restrict yourself to Road Trips releases. Here are a few personal suggestions for standout releases from each of the earlier years of the Dead (including expensive $$$ Box sets). You might want to look at the Best of Website that provides pretty good reviews of almost all the official releases. http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/Bands/Grateful_Dead/Grateful_Dead_Live… You can also listen to hundreds of shows at archive.org and decide what you like best 1968 (wild psychedelia and R&B) : ‘Two From the Vault’ or Road Trips 2.2 1969 (the jams get bigger and even better!): ‘Live Dead’ or ‘Fillmore West Compilation’. $$$$$$$$$$ Fillmore West Box Set. 1970 (acoustic and Americana start to feature): Road Trips 3.3, Dicks Picks 4, Dicks Picks 8 (Take your pick) 1971 (Spaced out cowboy bar room band): ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ 1972 (the full package!): ‘Steppin’ Out’ 1973 (laid back, dreamy, jammy and jazzy): Dicks Picks 28 or Dicks Picks 19. $$$ ’73 Winterland Box Set 1974 (deeper and weirder): Dicks Picks 12 or Road Trips 2.3. $$ GD Movie Soundtrack Box Set 1975 (on sabbatical) : One from the Vault 1976 (in transition): Dicks Picks 33 or Download Series Vol. 4(I think we are still waiting for the ultimate 76 release) 1977 (slicker, sharper with something for everyone) : So many to choose from. Maybe Dicks Picks 29. Maybe Dicks Picks 15. Maybe something else. $$$ ‘77 Winterland Box Set. 1978 (on from ’77, but less consistent): Maybe Road Trips 1.4 (I think we are still waiting for the ultimate 78 release) 1979 onwards: Not able to say. Someone else take over please! of course these are my personal preferences and prejudices good luck now Rhino, about that 10% commission!

I was not familiar with many aspects of the band live (though I saw them in '78 and own numerous studio albums.) The 30 Days tracks are on my iPod -- with repeated plays I have already moved beyond a casual fan. Any advice on the best "Road Trips" to purchase (assuming they are all still available...)?

two or three years ago and by strange coincidence (or not) another CC, the inestimable CCJoe used to run a regular competition on this site which kept a lot of us highly entertained. He, in the role of celebrity quizmaster, posted tiny audio clips of GD song intros and we all tried to guess what they were. Joe awarded special prizes for the winners. You can relive those days by visiting http://www.dead.net/forum/false-alarm-only-game-town and http://www.dead.net/forum/call-tune-season-2 Joe still comes calling here from time to time and its always great to see him.

The prizes are all packaged and ready to go...we do have a HUGE snowstorm coming here in Chicago in the next two days...I'm thinking I can get to USPS before things start getting really thick though. Sorry for the delay, and Mom is doing much better, and my bones are finally "chillin". Love you all. CC ♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥ Twirly Banner

Man - I'll walk in the SunShine DayDream any day!And it's not like we're waiting until September :-) The fact that you started the 31st Days competition off your own back, at your own expense, is deeply cool. Thank you Spring is over the horizon, and it sounds like it ain't gonna come too soon in the Canyon. Stay warm, and if you're in NYC this summer, there's a beer with your name on it.

Just got it today... awesome! Just in time for Friday night too... beautiful! We're gonna crank out a really nice vintage bottle of French wine tonight and play this beauty! Of course we're not stopping with just the bottle; there'll be a few choice brewskis to back that up for sure! :-) Hey, you only live once, and Sunshine Daydream is worth celebrating! Wish you were here Critter!! Thank you so much... I've been wanting to see this beauty for years! Nothing left to do but... :-) :-) :-) Love, hippiedarkstar

And on the 31st Day... Thank you so much for all of this. I can't recall any other band that gives me 30 days of free music from the depths of the archives and such great shows. The discussion and annual contest game will continue here: And on the 31st Day... Last year I made up a couple of games and gave out things like The Creamery Benefit Show of 8-27-1972 DVD. I worked hard on some new artwork for this year, and will add the back covers to the rest of the dead.net art already posted. Last night I could only stay up for a few hours dew to phone calls. I'll finish it up in the link above. Thanks for the list as well, I'll be using that to finish up the backs and the 6 Volumes. See you all this eve after work. ~Love is Real~ P.S. Yes this is a team effort. Like 3phase putting up the file and everyone else posting the links, etc. We are a family aren't we....Please make sure you stop by the 31st Day link (above) in the Dead.Net forum for everything related 30 Days of Dead in the future. All information and links and lists and contests will be posted there

This was the stuff I created, but not the stuff Dead.Net came up with. Don't know where that is. Last Years Album Artwork: 30 Days 2010~1 30 Days 2010~2 30 Days 2010~3 And let's move on to this year 2011! 30 Days 2010~4

Really, really nice art. I have to admit to being partial to the male/female skeleton pair. I wish I could post the Tibetan Kinkara skeleton couple. What deadheads did with this motif actually has an ancient lineage. You have a really nice touch, Mr. Critter

A five disc chronological set works so perfectly I feel like someone planned it out like this at HQ! Disc 1= 1967-71 Disc 2= 1972-73 Disc 3= 1974-77 (two Lazys but oh well) Disc 4= 1978-1981 Disc 5= 1982-1992 I'll still use the CD fronts.

This Monday: I'll be finishing up the 31st Day Contest tonight, sorry for the delay but I had alot of work over the last week. I would like to say that I'm truly happy that Dead.Net did such an excellent job this year, they really pulled out all the stops. In honor of David's new picks coming out, the contest is going to be a tribute to his "Star Wars" theme (not overly Ewok but just a hint). Please go here tomorrow to see the new video and contest. First contest prize is going to be the first 3 to guess the right venue, musicians, and song in the contest will be getting the wonderful Chateau D'Horreville show that was played on a whim (due to a cancellation of a festival) in 1971 by the GOGD. Oh and I elected not to make artwork this year, because Dead.Net and Rhino were so efficient on the album covers.

Contest 31st Day #1 2011 Winners are: ecb NFA1985 and Ted (don't know your dead.net name) I still need Ted's address, I've got the other two, so i can send him a good bag (with Chateau D'Horreville 1971 DVD) and a few other goodies for the holidays. Way to go! I know it was a little tougher than I had thought, I thought for sure people would get this right away. The answer was: Furthur, 5/30/2010, Calaveras County Fairgrounds (Angel's Camp, CA) "Samson and Delilah" From the left: Jeff Chimenti Phil Bobby Joe Russo Larry Campbell on fiddle Jeff Pehrson Sunshine John Kadlecik If you ever going to listen to Furthur, these three special nights at Frogtown, USA were some of the best music I've heard since the early 90's Grateful Dead. Especially Friday's show, check it out. Next contest will be up in a couple of days or so. ~Critter
