The upcoming Veterans Day and some posts on the subject have reminded me that, counterintuitive though it may be to the hippie-dippy stereotype, a whole lot of our brothers and sisters on the Bus are now serving or have served in the military.

If you're one of 'em, or your family and friends are, please post here!

for the dearly departed who lost their lives fighting an enemy, who also probably had family and friends waiting for them to come home, I shed a tear.

This holiday is so bitter... Do you know the actual meaning of Memorial Day? To remember those who have died or died as a result of their wounds sustained in action.

My father was a WWII vet and there was something old and hallowed in that right of a three gun salute and the ritual folding of the flag and presenting it to my mother.

The bitter part, of course, is the ongoing process of war, seemingly without end.

the highest salute offered

the ritual of 7 rifleman, firing 3 times, is the highest salute offered and is used for diginitaries and our fallen. i feel your pain gonzo. my own father is retired airforce, served in wwII, korea, and viet nam. tho we have never been really close, i dread the folding of his flag. god bless you and yours gonz, i wish we could bring them all home now, right now, and put the bitterness behind us.
