slippery slope

already on that slippery slope, johnman...

just went 21 days clean and sober, only to fall off the wagon and back on the sauce.

better or worse? there is only so much compost I can shovel in my self imposed pennance.

can't quit caffeine, never could never will. wont even try that. a man must know his limitations. I quit cookies, though, at least until my old lady gets access to a kitchen and bakes up a batch of raisin oatmeal.

( -:

peace.

from "Uncle John's Band"

"God dam, well I declare, have you seen the like?"
"Their walls are built from cannon balls"
"Their motto is 'don't tread on me'."

"Don't Tread On Me" is one of the flags that flew over the USA before we (they) settled on the Stars and Stripes. The motto is written on the flag. Peace, peace & music.

Morning Dew
Lyrics By: Bonnie Dobson
Music By: Bonnie Dobson
Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

I thought I heard a baby cry this morning,
I thought I heard a baby cry this today.
You didn't hear no baby cry this morning,
You didn't hear no baby cry today.

Where have all the people gone my honey,
Where have all the people gone today.
There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people,
You never see those people anyway.

I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I thought I heard a young man morn today.
I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I can't walk you out in the morning dew today.

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I'll walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I guess it doesn't really matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
I guess it doesn't matter anyway,
Guess it doesn't matter anyway.

One of the songs the Dead played almost every year from the 60s to the 90s. (1) It certainly sounds as if Jerry sings "mourn" even though the Bonnie Dobson original is "moan"

If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.

never forget

never forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

if / when you have the time, it is worthwhile to go to Hiroshima to see the Atomic Dome, the only building left from that fateful day. This was the city hall or something like that, and it was near a T shaped bridge that was the visual 'target' at ground zero, the metal frame and shit melted, twisted, and while much of the structure remains, it is pretty powerful to see.

the adjacent peace park, with lots of other exhibits, shadows of humas burned into the stone as they got vaporized. moved me to tears, especially the art work of the survivors and the video oral history of them talking about it.

Nagasaki has the museum, but no actual buildings left over.

peace.

Morning Dew

I too remember the drills, in Sacramento, probably early to mid 60's. We used to have to sit under our desks with our knees up and our head between them. I remember the class would get pretty quiet, kind of an eerie feel to it. We were pretty young, 7 or 8 I think, so we really didn't understand fully what was going on, but knew something serious. War seemed to be always on peoples minds when i grew up, went to the Phillipines with my parents, dad was in the Peace Corp in 1967 and I remember walking on the beach at Corrigidor and there was helmets and shells and such still on the beach. On the way home to california in 69 the ship stopped at Nagasaki, where 24 years earlier we dropped the atomic bomb on them, and stopped at a museum about the event. Very powerful times. Came back to the war protests and and the draft. War was everywhere.
You think we would have learned. Morning Dew has always been a powerful song for me.
Hal, keep on with your posts, always learn something and feel a little more informed by them.
Thanks Hal.
peace,pk

I wonder where PigPen went to grammer school.

I googled "San Francisco schools dog tags 1950s" and read that New York, SF, Seattle and other American cities issued dog tags to kids then. It was my first nightmare, I guess because I remember my Mom signing some papers and telling me that I was to say at school and not released to go home incase of nuclear attack.......! "God damn, I declare....." - a little Grateful Dead in here....
I forgot about earthquake drill, that under the desk thing if things start rockin'. And that early sugar cube thing was a polio vaccine. Vote change because it does matter.
