Geez, Brick--you sure know how to choose tough shows...
I did a quick surf of etree and found two downloads for the Portland 6/24/73 show, both of which appear to be the same source and length, and both of which are VERY partial (best guess is about 60% of the show). Both can be downloaded using a bit torrent program at http://bt.etree.org, and both are approximately 661 megabytes (but since neither of them is a recent post, they will both probably take a fairly long time to complete). If there IS a complete show out there, it probably just hasn't surfaced online yet (not all tapers joined the Internet bandwagon, and a LOT of tapes are lying in boxes, unseen for years). Now, if you needed the previous night's show from Vancouver, BC, instead, that one is fairly easy to get (in fact, I was listening to it in my car today).

They played a total of four shows in San Bernardino, CA, at the Swing Auditorium (3 of which I was fortunate enough to see--the other one, I was too young). Of the four, my favorite (probably because of the near-perfect "He's Gone" that was done to honor the memory of John Lennon) was December 12, 1980. Second to that was their tour-opening show on February 26, 1977 (when they premiered "Terrapin Station" and "Estimated Prophet," but not to be missed is their December 13, 1969 show, which I think is one of their best non-Bay Area shows of '69. Their tour opener at the Swing on January 6, 1978 COULD have been one of their best, too, but that was one of Jerry's legendary laryngitis shows (however, when he handed off all of the singing duties to Bobby for the second set and concentrated on his guitar, he played with incredible passion). Hell, a box set of these four shows would be a killer combo. Until one comes out, though, hit the bit torrents at bt.etree.org and make your own!

For about the past ten years, I had 8 Dick'sPick's and a copy of Cats Under the Stars as my Grateful Dead collection, so to me , this will always be my essential Dead collection, proven, tried and true. Dick's Pick's v. 12 3 CD set from Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island on 6/26/74 and Boston Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on 6/28/74. v.18 3 CD set from Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin on 2/3/78 and the Uni-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on 2/5/78. v.19 3 CD set from the Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 10/19/73. v.20 4 CD set with material from the 9/25/76 show at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland and the 9/28/76 show at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, New York. v.21 3 CD set with material from the 11/1/85 at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia plus some tunes from 9/2/80 v.31 4 CD set featuring performances from 8/4 and 8/5/1974 at the Philadelphia Civic Center in Philadelphia, PA and 8/6/1974 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ the other two were 11/8/69, and 2/11-14/70, but I don't have the cases anymore to see the v. #'s Also, I now have Nightfall of Diamonds, and would reccomend that as a desrt island selection, also.

I'm looking for this show (or as much is available). I'd prefer a lossless version. I'm new to trading, even though I've been on the bus since '69 (what can I say, I'm slow). If anyone can help, thanks in advance, and just let me know the drill. brickeys@optusnet.com.au

Id love to get this show recorded only because I attended it. There's definitely some shows from the 70s that were epic and hard to match. Ive heard Cal Expo in 89 was the best show that some people have ever attended. For heads old and new. I want to get a copy of Oregon State Prison. Was that 1982?? Ive seen it but have never had a chance to record it.

    Anyone up for some trading??
Id be up for trading various different bands from the dead to Marley or Led Zepplin. I mostly have dead but I do have one show from Marley when he played in Pittsburgh, then I also have one Zepplin show and a Garcia & John Kahn show as well. Id like to get some more Hendrix shows too. I had one show from 1968 I think it had an incredible version of 'machine gun' on it. Id like to replace that one. Send me your lists or drop me a line at: jerryrocks8.06@gmail.com

hey now, i've just recently discovered how cool 1980 is. Brent's still new and his voice sounds different than i've ever heard him, esp. on 9-6-80 (Lewiston, ME). many of the '80 shows have SICK Strangers, as well as UNBELIEVABLE Lost>Saints, and AWESOME Altheas. just three adjectives to describe some of the music. check out this show for Brent's voice, the three aforementioned songs, and the Alabama opener (which i absolutely love from 1980--anyone else think Alabama is one of the most underrated Dead songs of all-time?). also, check out April Fool's 1980 (smokin' show), 1/13/80, and 5/7/80 (WOW--at Barton Hall, first and only Playin' in the Barn--check it out). these are all just imho. ymmv, of course. peace. Hello, I don't have noncommercial recordings to trade. I can offer four blank CDs, two of which a friendly taper could keep, and the other two could be used to record the final set of the 13th. The recorded pair could then be mailed back in a stamped, self-addressed bubble envelope. I'm particularly interested in the 3rd set, the electric one with Dark Star/The Other One/Turn On Your Love Light. I wish I had more to offer. If anyone is interested please contact me. I am in the process of transferring 3000 cassette tapes to CD. As they are transferred, I no longer need the tapes. But I just cannot dump them in the trash. Right now I have about 1000 tapes in 2 large boxes in the garage. They are free for the taking. I live in San Rafael, CA. Send me a note mpie@rccostello.com if you are interested. Best regards, Mark

DO NOT use those fancy adhesive labels on your discsI used to put them on my discs and they would look nice as I would import all these cool colors and graphics and run them thru the color printer BIG MISTAKE... over time, the adhesive interaction with the media rendered them useless My CD player wouldn't read them, the ones it could read had an incredible amout of static. I was able to save about 100 or so recently but must have lost 100-150 discs... Regarding essential 1980's shows (as that was the original topic) in addition to what's been mentioned: 9/2/80 quite possibly the year's best show & a '77-esque Sugaree IIRC 9/11,12,13/81 Greek 6/30/85 killer Shakedown! 7/1/85

Does anyone have a copy of this list? I was always interested in finding what the shows to have were, and I keep seeing posts on the Web about this poll. Of course, it lists 5/8/77 as #1 but I wanted the whole list to get started on the collection.

If you look up Dick's Picks #4 on Wikipedia, it references this tape trader poll and says that the 2/13/70 show was #2 with 5/8/77 being #1.

I always go back to the tapes that originally turned me on. The ones where I knew I had heard something that really hit me on a personal level. The ones that changed the way I listen to music in general. The ones where i got it for myself, for sure, no question about it. A lot of these have been mentioned multiple times already so I will leave those out until I write my autobiography. In no particular order: 12-05-1971 Love the SOUND. Cool echo/reverb plus amazing jams. SOTOTW! 04-18-1971 Tight, passionate, concentrated, FOCUS. Great banter! 05-04-1972 Elegant, class. Flowing, natural, pure, effortless, IN the pocket. 10-26-1989 My 2nd show. Stunned into silence! Cathartic, arrow thru the heart. 07-08-1990 First show that I was physically transported by. Got on the floor, inside the sound. 06-14-1991 Help peeled my face off, Slipknot rearranged my chromosomes, plus the rest! 08-21-1972 Great Dark Star, great feel, great soundboard. 06-18-1974 Favorite 1974 show. Dreamy, lazy, fiery, what summer is all about. This is the super-short version of my list.

The tape that originally made me go, "WOW! I have to see this band live!" was the second set of 1/15/79. The segue from "Miracle->Shakedown" still ranks as one of my all time favorite, and the meandering mess that is the near 40 minute "Playing" makes me smile and dance to this day. I have a tape player in my home office to this day so that I can play THAT tape. It sounds better on tape, that show.

I need the answer(s) to an idiotic question but here goes...Is there one show from the Europe '72 run that could be considered the 'most' essential? I just can't afford the $450 right now for the entire run but would like to know if there is just one show that needs to be heard.

Some earlier mentioned after Brent past Vince didnt fuel Jer in any way nor come even close to filling the Brent void. Then on some runs when Hornsby had the big grand up there that really fuelled Jerry to drive his leads up on to another plateau based on Hornsby's style. Other than the fact that I personally can't stand Vince's and Bruce's vocals which almost sound the same and Hornsby was too loud some nights brought Jer into a volume war and a creativity war exchanging leads with Bruce. I believe it was the 2nd night deer creek91 2nd set Scarlet

I bough the cheapest blanks I could find and I have many recorded from the late 70s that still sound pristine. Not only are the blanks bad quality, they got hauled around to different parst of the country. I've lost maybe 2-5% of my collection. Maybe it has something to do with playing them on a regular basis, One tape I have blows away Dick's Pick's (#?) Salt Palace. OMG, the Other One is molecular. Like Dick said: Caveat Emptor. To be fair, it is the only tape I have that is better than a DP and the DP actually caught Phil's into. much more clearly. I have heard from hard core tapers about tape degeneration. I just got lucky, I guess

Days Between. That song had so much potential, yet all the versions that I remember seeing or hearing, just don't do it justice. The TRI version was sweet, but I'd love to get my hands on or listen to on the archive the best possible version(s) of this beautiful song with JG singing and leading the charge. It's one of those tunes that could've been the modern day "Morning Dew." THank you.
