By suggestion, since the Obama reunion topic is now a hotbed of discussion on the proper guitarist for the gig.

Here's the scenario: for whatever reasons seem good to them, Bob, Billy, Mickey and Phil decide to play some gigs together.

Who's the rest of the band?

not a dream one, but a

not a dream one, but a prediction: mark karan, jackie green, jeff chimenti. karan just played an august 31 show with phil in the absence of larry campbell. jackie can take up the vocal slack, and i picked chimenti only because i prefer him to molitz.

for purposes of this discussion

perhaps we should confine ourselves to musicians still with us on this mortal plane, 73...

For one thing, the Brent camp duking it out with the Pigpen camp ain't gonna be pretty. Let's not go there...

Scott M

I won't dare to try to spell his last name here, but Scott M from Max Creek! He played with Billy K and the Mike Gordon band, and jsut ROCKS! He's the perfect fit in Jerry's guitar place, but you'd still need Jackie Greene to cover the vocals! Scott's voice is great, but rough and not very Jerry like!

My fantasy would be

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen joining Phil, Bob, Mickey and Billy.

Oh and Marye, Pigpen duking it out with Brent is kinda like Ali duking it out with my 12 year old daughter. I love my daughter, but I wouldn't put her in the ring with Ali. I enjoyed Brent, but come on!

Only those still with us?

Damn, just when I was gonna suggest Miles Davis and Charlie Parker along with Jerry and His Pigness. Can't you just imagine Miles, Bird and Jer swapping fours on a Playin or Dark Star? My ears are melting just thinking about it. And what wouldn't we all give for just one more Pig Lovelight rap?

Sorry to blow the protocol. I'll shut up now.

Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

protocol?

like THAT's gonna last, with Deadheads involved. Although the dream lineup of those who have passed on, to say nothing of the setlist, might also be a lively topic... Benny Goodman!
