CAROLINE,

First thing, i'm sorry to hear that about your stepson. Second thing, I really agree with you about the transportation idea for stoners as well as drunks. Third, you are the first person that I know, that has ever known someone that has been killed by a stoned driver. I,m not saying it could'nt happen, i'm just saying you don't usually hear about it, it's always drinkin and driving. I support NORMAL, but if weed was legalized, it should be treated like our alchol laws.

And, YES, your right, NO ONE should be under any alchol or drug behind the wheel of a vehicle.

and yes...

I do see the irony of being an anti-authoritarian mod, but that's the paradox of Deadhead life for you!

well...

I think one reason Heads don't run for office, in general, is that political office by its very nature is authoritarian, and the whole Dead thing is anti-authoritarian to the core. I do not aspire to boss other people around, and I think you have to to want to hold political office. (It's not that simple, of course, but the issue is one not of getting rid of rules but of changing rules to ones you like better, which to my mind does not address the fundamental problem.)

On the other hand, my friend John Leopold, serious Deadhead sometimes seen around this parts, successfully ran for county supervisor in Santa Cruz County, an office he holds as we speak, so mileage varies and I'd just as soon have Heads in office too.

I am all for ending greed I

I am all for ending greed I suggest rather than targeting executives we say greedy people.

I would hope that we would embrace freedom, responsible behavior and our amazing variety of human talent. And a national holiday celebrating The Grateful Dead. Yes A 4 day weekend!

And the road goes on forever....

the price we pay

I have witnessed first-hand the misery, violence and appalling environmental destruction caused in the tropics by the cultivation of substances so valued in the west. But I have little confidence that making such things legal and putting them in the hands of the gangsters who run big business would make very much difference.

No, what we need is a whole new way of thinking about commodities and how we use them. If Deadheads ‘ruled’ the world, I would like to think that we would all be making, using, growing and trading things we need and things we value (fuel, food, materials, medicines for the body and mind) much closer to home and that we would all know and care much more about where they come from, how they came into being and who was involved. Nice dream.

I'm with Pid

and I would add, legalizing the substances and restoring personal freedom does not absolve the ingestor of responsibility for behavior. Drugging and driving is no different from drinking and driving in this regard. Ingest what you like, but you're responsible for what happens to others as a result.

Pretty straightforward nose/fist issue, to me.

Though hippie taxis, also a good idea!

all that, and...

i love the idea of children playing music or drawing or writing. the world needs more poetry!

as the step parent of a beautiful, vivacious, and awesome teenager killed by a stoned driver, i am opposed to the all-out legalization of those substances that cause 'no direct, measurable harm' to others. all it takes is one doped-up moron behind the wheel to cause direct and immeasurable harm to others.

before anyone flips out, i understand completely the intention- but just like the unintended consequences of the wars on terror or wars for oil- the unintended consequence of an all-out legalize it movement could be hell on earth.

so, we should spend some of that money on stoner transportation routes to all locales. i hate driving anyway, and if i had a trusted designated driver/thinker, boy would that be a huge help! i'd be able to have a glass of wine (or whatever) away from home! kick ass!!!

so, if deadheads ran the world, all people would be kind, miracles would happen every day, the wheel would keep covering a little more ground, and we'd all love each other.

let's make it happen!

new world man

every child would be taught how to play a musical instrument. There would be no children starving to death. Evil, greedy, and dishonest executives would be tarred and feathered. I could go to the store and buy a joint if I needed to.
