Cosmicbadger was pointing out that the discussion in other areas is getting derailed by assorted comments as to what should be happening with The Vault and its contents. He went on to suggest that maybe this should have its own topic. And here it is!

Thanks Marye for starting this up. Maybe pissing in the wind as they say, but hell, let’s start this on a positive note.

I have been thinking awhile about David Lemieux’s workload. Making the picks for Tapers section and doing the necessary processing…well it probably takes a while and maybe what comes out is sort of ‘by catch’ from bigger projects ( I hope) . Maybe 1 day per week?.. Preparing stuff for Sirius…well I have never heard it so I don’t know what it takes, but lets say another day or two. Those two jobs don’t seem like a full time gig to me (correct me if I’m wrong). So maybe, just maybe the rest of his time he is crafting multitrack gems for us to enjoy down the line. Nice dream?

What has been getting me is why no-one has made any positive official announcements, or holding statements or anything ..all we get are indirect hints that good people are saying the right things. It totally baffles me what they are trying to do. I think if I ran the vault and listened to what is coming from this site, I would at least say
a) Thanks for being here and supporting this thing and providing so much feedback
b) What in outline the plan is. For me, given how much SBD stuff is available out there, my intention would be to focus on multitrack source material. If it takes a year to produce a multi CD release then I would tell people just that.

Enough I think……….

I'd give the job to cosmicbadger 'cause it sounds like he has the right idea.

yes but

avatar

well thanks for that Richard, but my I am too clumsy to thread all those tapes, my ears are shot and all those hours sitting at the console would play hell on my piles!

Hmm

I don't know what's all in there, but releasing some dvd's would be my priority! Halloweens comming up, maybe pick a special halloween show and release it, and so and on and on.

Badger, I have the same problem

Like so many areas of my life, I still have the heart for it but the body won't cooperate.

Like my Dad used to say: I hate getting older but the alternative is unacceptable.

Sigh.........

Only Choice Cuts

Now if I ran the vault, I'd make available I Need A Miracle, Might As Well, Minglewood, and that ultra-rare combo, Throwin Stones>NFA.

What? They just did that?? No way!!!

Cooky & cool...

I like it too much! Ifn's I twas in charge of the said Vault, I would recommend some sort of rotating "Boss" to be in REAL charge of things... We could elect a first time replacement to Lemieux, (I hereby nominate Cosmic Badger...) and that way, people would realize the ipso-factoids of controlling the worthwhile values that are around us all. Of course we could only do this if it worked. And it CAN. Don't forget, The Mayor of Los Angeles, during the 60's tried to initiate recycling long before it was "deemed" acceptable & neccesary. What does that have to do with this? Think about it...
Thank you, Mayre & Badger.

information

information is key.
maybe folks won't like what they hear, but at least they one way or the other.

If I ran the vault, I would not just treat it as distribution company would. I would want the vault handled by knowledgeable and talented fans, and would make policies that reflect what the fans want and ask for... Thusly, I would probably put the company into debt, because I would market the music more like a cult movie than a "Sounds of the 60's" kinda thing... which I guess is what sells... if anything really sells these days...
It's a really tough call in the current market... it's amazing that there are already so many releases in this kind of market. To me, the starbucks thing was the only way that the bean counters could really sell some product. it's business folks.

Now if Rhino was to come out and tell all of us that, would we be happy to hear it?

I would contact the remaining members of the band and let them know that the lack of response from Rhino and the band members has alienated some of the fans and caused a loss of trust and good faith and we need to get it together and be more open if possible. And I would ask Robert Hunter to get involved. I sure miss his wisdom regarding the Dead world.

If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.

Vault Management

First off thanks Cosmicbadger for your kind comments in the Tapers section.

GDP Management - There are many things that have fallen to the wayside with this company. To get things back on track I'd get back to the business of music in several steps I would.....

1. Bring back the quarterly Almanac mailers to inform the fans of whats in the works.

2. Revive the Dicks Picks and Download series with new offerings. Quarterly with DPs and monthly w/ downloads.

3. Release at least 2 multi-track releases a year.

4. Revive the View From The Vault series, DVDs and soundtracks. One a year would be fine.

5. If funding is an issue with releasing certain stuff offer a special preorder to pay for projects in advance and print only whats ordered instead of having warehouses filled with unsold merchandise. That would cut down on overhead dramatically.

6. On this sight maybe have a feature for a daily or weekly diary by David Lemeiux, John Cutler or whoever is involved in the process of mixing/mastering shows/sessions for release and discuss the progress of certain projects in the works in technical terms.

7. Maybe put streaming videos (Youtube style) up with the streaming music each Monday.

I have many more ideas and will post them later.
