picture a bright blue ball...

suggested by Stuman: How about a forum deadicated just to our Mother Earth ? A place where we can talk specificly about recycling tips, reusing of what we can`t recycle and reducing waste. And other enviromental issues. I'm actually surprised we don't have something like this. Greenpeace and other groups have always been around the shows (at least the shows I remember) . And the GD has been into saving the rainforest and saving our Mother Earth. So lets talk about it here. Earth Day should be every day!! what do you all think abt it?

So Love my Job

I am in the wind industry for all the right reasons, yes it is so hard to be away from my family months at a time but when the US is so far behind Europe on alternative energy because there is this belief that oil and coal are good for us or so it seems when you hear the politicians spout. Enough of that, the alternative energy movement is a good thing when you think about it, I mean basically free energy after the initial cost of erecting the windfarm or solarfarm. Now if someone wishes to go into the government subsidies look at oil and coal or even farming and if you delve deep enough you will see those industries are subsidized as well.
I am hoping in the next 10 years we see the big wind turbines Europe is using by loosening regulations on height and also we in the US need to stop OVERANALYZING everything our dependence on conventional energy needs to be drastically cut and with wind or solar this can be achieved. We are smart enough to see the writing on the wall yet it seems we choose to not want to change and by spending too much time worrying about an animal or insect that will move from the location of a windfarm or learn to coexist within its boundaries, people if we don't act now there won't be an Earth for that animal or insect that we/you are trying to save.

Yikes indeed

"Believing in" global warming as a function of the economy...people see "going green" as something good to do when times are good, but we tend to go into survival mode (necessities only! this can wait!) when things are going poorly. It's a natural reaction when you don't have a visceral sense that gobal warming poses a threat -- no fight-or-flight physiological reaction to a crisis that we can only appreciate intellectually.

In that sense, we're still slaves to our animal nature. When changes occur too slowly for us to directly perceive, it's tough for most people to become alarmed by them...like the proverbial frog never jumping from the pot of water as it's slowly, slowly heated to a boil.

Like fighting wars with all-volunteer armed forces (no direct threat to me)....sorry, off-topic.

Yikes, indeed.

Wail of "The Doomed"

... More people now doubt that global warming is real than compared to last year. Commentators said it's because of the economy. If popular consciousness is moving in favor of denial on such an important topic I think it's time to hit the 'Yikes!' button... YIKES!!!

Thank you lamagonzo

It`s nice to know I`m not alone on the Global Warming thing . I agree with you . " Those who continue to claim that global warming is not real are deluding themselves. "

no winds ?

It would be too dreadfully boring to live i a world without feeling the winds blowing ! What would be the point of surviving in undergrounds where we don't see the sun each day! All that just to "live" ?No thanks ! But it's true the chinese pollute more and more and simply taxing europeens more and more for ecology is not going to save the world !

Arctic shipping lanes now open

Today's news has mentioned that Arctic shipping lanes are now open and if global warming continues then these routes may be viable IN THE WINTER as well. El Nino may bring a very temporary halt to the warming but the pattern will continue. The US military is actively going through war gaming on these new, strategic routes (nuke the polar bears?).

The most troublesome thing on the ecological front is China. Putting one coal-fired power plant online every week means that our planet has no chance. The fact that we are indebted to the Chinese for our inflated standard of living (financed by China's continued buying of US treasuries) means that we will do nothing to stop the Chinese. We can do everything in this country to become more efficient but it means NOTHING in the face of this.

We are doomed to become subterranean dwellers within a century or two. Or live in domed biospheres if such technology becomes feasible. There is no alternative. Of course this means that those who can afford it will be underground or in the domes and those outside will perish or mutate and adapt in something less than human form.

The long term good news is that the Earth has a way of cleansing itself and getting rid of human beings is a very good means to that end. Those who continue to claim that global warming is not real are deluding themselves.

change!

Congratulations to the people in Humboldt County, CA. who just approved a project to erect 34- 100 foot high wind turbines which will supply the county of about 130,000 people with half of the power it uses when the wind is blowing.

Excelent ideas gratefaldean

I totally agree with you . We compost , recycle and re-use everything we can .
I`ve made flower pots and mini teraiums out of the cd/dvd spindles after i use up all the discs.
And yes maybe we`ve come a little bit furthe , we did`nt have all the recycling centers 20 years ago like we have now , at least here in ths States . And I hav`nt purchased a new car since 89 now i do own a 97 H.D. . but i keep my old clunker cars running and they are pretty fuel economical too .

climates

I don't know about you folfs aroud the whole GD worlds ,but here in Brittany ,we sure could't get much of a suntan ,and as tomorrow is already september 1st I can safely conclude the kettle is not yet boiling over in northern spheres ,so I won't worry overly about climate changes yet ! It might be wiser ,here ,to start getting a winter quilt out of the closet !
