Send some healing vibes to northern Minnesota

My mother had emergency open heart surgery last night, and they found a faulty/failed valve and had to do a double bypass. She came through the surgery and now its time for the 'waiting and watching'. Thanks much.

that's so creepy...

and pretty resonant with my experience when the family-owned magazine I'd worked for for 14 years got sold to a large (and astonishingly clueless with regard to how things actually worked) media conglomerate that in turn was part of a larger conglomerate distinguished by tobacco companies and the like. They went after one department after another, using every evil divide-and-conquer trick in the book, and after a year and a half they went after my people and me (who had declined to fall for the divide-and-conquer ploy). So I gathered them, told 'em I couldn't protect them any more, and we all quit. Our replacements were already waiting in the wings.

Needless to say, a year and a half later they folded the magazine, though not before being sued by a number of the folks they'd hired to replace us. And when the stock hit 17 cents, why yes, I did enjoy a minute of schadenfreude.

So sorry about all this, TigerLilly. Been there, done that. Been freelance ever since.

not to mention the fact

that the firing spree was so sudden and cold-hearted. People were called in, one after the other, told get your stuff and go home NOW, and don't come back.No warning, no mercy.

This cost-cutting trend is really evil and devious. Who is supposed to buy the products produced by companies when a huge percent of the population is unemployed, and living under the poverty level, due to recent German unemployment benefit "reforms"?

Germany is following the U.S. in the cut-cost/outsourcing trend, and moving production of many goods that used to be made here, to eastern Europe, where costs are cheaper.

Hey izzie

He didn't in this swoop, but is only a matter of time before production (the company produces a series of free-ad papers w/regional issues for all of Germany) is moved to Romania. The real kicker in that is that Matthias' has been sent back and forth to Romania to "train" the guys in the automatic-lay out program that he is the resident expert on (is the only reason he's not lost his job yet). Thus he is training his own replacement. He knows this, and is very degrading for him. BUT at least he knows what is coming, and is looking for another job, and will not be suprised like the others were on Thursday. Another ray of hope in this whole scenario for him is that he had an interview with a heart foundation publication, where the general manager is trying to create a new position and is only offering it to Matthias-not listing it to the general public. He just has to wait until the next board meeting in November, to see whether the budget for the new position will be given approval. Needless to say, is hard for him to go to work every day. Some of the guys who were fired were over 50, and as the pre-press/paper production jobs are few and far between these days, their working lives are as good as over.

Bad day for some

Matthias called me today (my kids' father) very very upset. The company where he works just experienced one of those evil corporation cutbacks today. Whole departments were fired on the spot, with no warning and no notice. People's lives were ruined in one fell swoop. Matthias and I spent a good amount of time pitying his co-workers, and spewing about these damn big companies that are willing to ruin people's lives, for the sake of a few more bucks in the upper management's pockets.

Anyhow, suddenly changed the perspective somewhat of me going to Spain to work. It sucks and is sad, and I will miss my children every day, but I have luck in my misfortune, as I am working for a small company that is relatively secure. I will be able to feed my children with relative security. Is a sad state of affairs what some people have to do for a job these days!

Thank you for continuing to bring this to our attention. You are not getting "so preachy".
My heart goes out to these brave monks and to the people of Burma.
I think one thing we can do is to use them as an example of being involved in political action from a place of loving kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. To bring a spirit of inner peace in stopping oppression and not acting in anger. To minimize needs and wants. To follow our breaths. I have a lot to learn.
