Setlist

I found the following compiled setlist at this site:

http://www.deadhookforums.com/showthread.php?t=895

The sequence of bands seems about right, in my faded twisted memory of the day. Apparently, the whole show is out there on six CDs somewhere. The asterisks aren't mine, but the copy and paste was. Thanks StuHanson, whoever you are.

Audio

Not much Ranch Rock audio out there; all I found at Internet Archive was this really quite tasty recording of the set by Cippolina and Problem Child:

Video

I found a few videos on youtube from this event:

I Hear You Knockin - Kingfish

Poison Ivy - Kingfish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8BziNebv4o

Piece Of My Heart - Mickey & The Daylites

Don't let Mickey's legs blind you in that last one.

While researching Ranch Rock, I heard a story that there's pro-shot video of the entire event that was scooped up at the end of the day by TPTB for deposit in the GD vault. The clips above are pretty clearly hand-held consumer video (circa 1986), but shot by someone with stage access. I'm just starting to dig into this project and already I'm finding some truly amazing stuff. More to come...

Yes ...

I remember too, and the sound as well, since that was why I made the trip.

If my recollections are correct the one day festival was postponed before it actually happened. I was in San Francisco at the time doing my BIG "pilgrimage", that is when I bought the tickets to the US Jerry was still alright and I was looking forward to follow the planned Grateful Dead midwest tour in August of that year. After Jerry fell into his coma I decided to go anyway.

By the time I went Jerry had got out of the coma but of course the planned GD tour was cancelled. Out of my ten weeks in the US I spent about six weeks in the Bay Area, mostly living at an youth hostel in San Francisco.

Me and Swiss friend whom I met at the hostel decided to go to Pyramid Lake for the Ranch Rock '86 event. We boarded a night bus from SF to Reno, Nevada and after having a breakfast hitch-hiked to the festival site. We were lucky enough to get a ride from outside Reno to the actual site with a Las Vegas plated car driven by a woman and her husband going to the same place.

I haven't got the time now to tell you about the festival itself because I gotta go to my work but I took out the poster some 15 minutes ago (it's still rolled in a tube) and put it on the livingroom floor and with books holding it down I took a picture. I then have uploaded the pic on Photobucket. Let's hope it will be visible.

Before I go I should mention that by the time Mickey & the Daylites was about to enter the stage it had gotten so dark, they decied to change their name to Mickey & the Twilights.

I remember

that it was a pretty darn otherworldly landscape out there, so I hope you get some good visuals.

Also, looking back on in, pretty incredible lineup of bands.

At the time, I think, it was still kind of an open question whether our world would continue to exist, because of Jerry's situation, and I think that tension and the alien landscape put the whole thing in a whole different place from what it might have been otherwise.

I don't remember how the sound was! (I was wandering around a lot.)

The Care and Feeding of a Documentary Impulse

Thanks marye.

This one day festival took place at Pyramid Lake just outside of Reno, Nevada on September 7, 1986. JG was on the mend after spending five days in a coma earlier in the summer, so the Ranch Rock line-up was made up of GD-related bands, such as Kingfish (featuring Bob Weir with an arm in a sling), Mickey And The Daylites (Mickey Hart, Kathy McDonald, Barry Melton, Dave Jenkins, Bobby Vega, David Freiberg and John Cipollina), Robert Hunter And The Mystery Band (Hunter with Barry Melton, Steve Kimock, Bobby Vega, David Freiberg, Mickey Hart and John Cipollina), Problem Child (John Cipollina, Greg Douglass, Bobby Vega, Greg Elmore and Jeff Nations) and Zero (John Cipollina, Steve Kimock, Bobby Vega, Greg Anton, John Farey and Martin Fierro). The Hog Farm was there with their balloon sculptures flying high over the sun-scorched hippies skinny dipping knee-deep in the mud of the lake, and the camping scene the night before was pretty crazy too. Man-made satellites criss-crossing galaxies spiraled under the dilated gaze of the uncertainty principle, while others anxiously spent their time in search of elusive horny toads, perhaps for licking.

I made the trip with a friend of mine. We were in our mid-twenties and had seen quite a few GD shows by that time, but mostly back east; looking back today I can see that the trip we made to Pyramid Lake was a huge turning point for both of us, which is why I find myself wanting to make a documentary about our trip to this event. So, what I'd like to see here is memories from other folks who were there. Photos. Videos. Whatever you've got. Ranch Rock Freaks Unite: Who are you? Where are you? How are you? Drop a line here and we'll keep each other informed.
