Tie Dye Star - Supporting Dead Heads in the Service

Along the general lines of you don't have to support the war to support the troops, I have long been impressed with the work of a group in the Bay Area called Blue Star Moms (http://www.bluestarmoms.org/), which seems to have affiliates all over. What they do is collect stuff for care packages and send it to service folks overseas. In their case, it's mostly stuff like socks, toiletries, and other fairly practical items.

So I've been having a conversation in a back channel with GOGD, our fellow Head who's currently serving in Iraq, as to whether we could do something of the sort for our fellow Heads and/or their family members in the service.

I haven't thought this through, of course. Clearly we can't do the Blue Star Moms thing of having collection boxes for donations all over town, being in cyberspace, and we're probably best suited to something small scale.

So this topic is for brainstorming and seeing if anything comes of it.

Hey folks this could be the start of something good, I can't be the only Deadhead in thhe service. Dead related stuff doesn't really exist here and I know It makes me happy to get a little something sometimes. A brother just sent me 4/21/71 and I am so happy for this. I have read Living with the Dead, ( took me 3 yrs finally finished it here) On the Road and Searching for the Sound here also. I sent to amazon to get some but not everyone has a credit card, I would surely give up these to interested heady people. If someone sent it to me in a care package Would have been really special ya know. These are some ideas and examples.

Mary maybe call it Box of Rain. get BoR in the desert with a message "Love will see you through"
This could be important to some people who may have left their head friends or peaceniks to serve this country and maybe got a bunch of shit about it. Here we are saying hey we support you and thanks. For me getting thanks from other heads is good enough. I don't ask for anything in return for my service been doing this a long time. But I'm sure there are some serving either civilian or military that would appreciate a dead family hello. Not everyone get's our sense of humor or messages. Anyway if you have an Idea or something put it out there.

Freedom isn't Free.

oh yea the first time I was over here my brother sent me a SYF patch. I used to carry it around in my helmet. Kind like don't ever forget where you came from and why you are doing what you are.

I love the name Box of Rain
"Love will see you through" is a wonderful messege to spread!
You guys need a little light to shine on you over there and nothing like GD memorabilia to do it, even if its a sticker or a cd, that would brighten any day!

Hey what a wonderful idea!

Looks like people have and like the idea. But how do we find those persons. I'm not really sure on that one, Anybody? How do we, Maybe put out a flyer at shows. Something like
"Hey now do you have or know someone Serving overseas"? write to----------. just a thought.

I don't suppose

Stars & Stripes has the appropriate genre of classified ads. Or that that would be the right approach...

I think....

It is appropriate Mary E.......after all to quote: "Americans who sent a message to the world we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states & blue states, we are & always will be the United States of America"
xoxo love that.....Gypsy Cowgirl

S&S doesn't have classifieds only advertisments. There is no personal page stuff in it. It does have letter to the editor where you can write in opinions and such. Usually related to a story posted in previous paper. S&S would most likely be dead end.

cool
