All Good Things

Am exploring the fantastic Jerry 'Studio Sessions' Box set. Great production, really good booklet and as well as all the favourite albums lots of little gems on the bonus tracks and outtakes disc.

I loved the version of Zevon's 'Accidentally Like a Martyr' with Jerry on Electric Piano, Bob Matthews on Bass and Steve Parish on Drums. So much else too; currently listening to the fascinating 'Orpheus' instrumental and jam credited to the Grateful Dead and from the 'Reflections' sessions.

Newport Folk Festival 09 theme week continues

Gillian Welch (w/David Rawlings -- there's also a David Rawlings Machine set at Newport in 2009, so this one is billed as Gillian Welch).

Apparently the duo had a travel snafu and were only able to make it to the gig on time by virtue of a police escort to Ft Adams Park.

About halfway through the set, Gillian admitted that she hadn't slept in 36 hrs and was feeling a bit unhinged from reality. "I feel like I'm on drugs!" She decided to go with the feeling...asked to have the reverb cranked way up -- she wanted to sound like she was in the "Batcave."

And once satisfied that her sound was sufficiently spacy, she launched into a superb cover of "White Rabbit." I don't know if it was planned or not, but it sounded spontaneous, and was just exactly perfect...

Free downloads from the festival are available at the link below, if you're interested.

Notes:

1) While there are minor gaps in all sources at various places, there is a three-minute gap in the AUD patch (Sennheiser 421) during Drums, so only the SBD plays for part of Drums.

2) Love the Space in this show, for some reason. Come to think of it, I love this show too.

Remastering Notes (06/24/08):

1) Portions of all songs were re-synced, except Friend of the Devil, Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Drums, and I Need a Miracle.

Having apparently killed part 9

With my numerical observation, I'd like to pay tribute to my lovely wife in part 10....whose birthday this year is on 10/10/10.

She was kind enough to accompany me to my first Dead show (Augusta, ME 7/29/79)... and I say "kind" because as I later learned, she HATES the Grateful Dead, in ways I couldn't have imagined. BUT, she's spent the intervening years encouraging me to do what I love, even if it did/does mean that I'm occasionally absent from home to get to a show or three. Here's to ya, sweetheart.

Sorry, more appropriate for "they love each other...but" forum topic, but I'm not listening to much besides the ringing in my ears at the moment.
