Making that list, checking twice

John Hiatt -- Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns

The Decemberists -- The King is Dead

Listening through my favorite 2011 releases, studio album category. In no specific order, so this isn't really a countdown to #1.

Once in a while a band comes along and minds are blown. Nuff said.

The Good Old Grateful Dead from the Fox Theater in St. Louis. The show took place on a Friday, 40 years ago today - 12/10/71. Courtesy Charlie Miller, I'm listening right now to Jack Straw from the first set - please, please, please, Charlie, you've convinced me - do the second set. I still love this show to death!

"The first set is a playful, uplifting strut. The band is in fine form, making it appear effortless. Pigpen is relaxed and vibrant on his two tunes. "Casey Jones" is taken to a blistering peak to close the first set." Michael M. Getz

The rest of the write-up - which is considerable - from the first Taper's Compendium deals with the second set. Hopefully, I'll be able to quote it one day - it ends with "The "Saturday Night" encore, like nearly all versions from the Fall of '71, is red hot." Amen.

In need of a smile this morning, I turned here...

I just wanna live until I gotta die
I know I ain't perfect, but God knows I try
I think I'm an alright guy
I think I'm an alright guy
I think I'm alright

Happy Friday!

But not

Tom Waits -- Bad as Me

My vinyl order from Amazon arrived without the promised CD version included. I suspect that Amazon got a batch of LPs missing the CD, and they refused to ship, or promise to ship at a later date, the CD. I settled for some money knocked off my bill. Not, of course, enough to purchase a CD, though the amount did go up as my complaint escalated.

So I'll be listening when I can in my den, or when I buy the CD, whichever comes first.

If Lamagonzo sees this, I think that I may have jinxed my "neutral luck" status by revealing it to you.

Bad customer service, it's not just for Rhino anymore...

Wish You Were Here -- "Experience" edition, bonus disc

The alternate take of "Wish You Were Here," with a violin over the top of the back leg of the song, and the scat vocals missing...pretty nice.
