To Soeharto, (and to others who are getting bummed for whatever reason)
dudes, stick around for a while, if you choose. up to you what you do, but shucks, give things a chance to get together. who jumps from a ship of fools which just has a few leaks?
please give the crew a chance to fix 'em.
you wanna get off the bus, here? up to you, dude, but personally my old bus had really uncomfortable seats, a rusted through floorboard, shock absorbers which worked in the opposite way (giving shocks rather than absorbing them) and a transmission that left pieces up and down every highway in North America... anyways, it was one hell of a ride.
I think my old lady is quite pleased when I spend MORE time on the 'puter... ( -;
"quoting previous posts
CC, I would say for now just do it the old-fashioned way. Thanks."
sheesh, when I was a boy, we used to be able to click on a quote thing...
nah, just kidding. ( -: (tongue frmly in cheek)
reminds me of things my father used to say...
'when I was a boy, I had to walk 5 miles to school. everyday. in the snow. snow even in summer. uphill.
uphill, BOTH ways...'
sorry - I thought that was funny, and wanted to capture it!
PCW - we've been through this alot in the past few days, and as you poke around you'll undoubtedly see references to this issue in various places, and MaryE and I haven't changed the answers yet.
It's a housekeeping issue, not a personal one. There are people here from GD sites that don't allow any user-created forums, and people from GD sites that are all about the free-for-all forums. We're working on a balance here, and are getting some pretty positive feedback about it.
While it may not be what you're used to, maybe give it a try for more than just the first day? If there is a particular forum you would like created, just ask. I know it's a little awkward, but really, we don't bite. usually. not hard, at least.
Absolutely correct. Forums exist for the enjoyment of the participants, not for the pleasure of the mods. Unless we're allowed to open our own topics, this will become a very uneventful, unvisited, and boring Forum.
I agree. This site is too busy, too slow, and not intuitively designed.
Is this now the Grateful Dead Store (www.gdstore.com)? If so, I'm not impressed so far.
What happened to the downloads?
What happened to the Dick's Picks special collections at slightly reduced prices?
As far as the Forum goes, it's only useful to any of us if we can create our own topics and have back-and-forth banter with each other. If all we can do it post to topics opened by the mods, it'll be one static Forum.
CC, I would say for now just do it the old-fashioned way. Thanks.
For all practical purposes, though the term hasn't been used, we are functionally in public beta on this for quite a while. As folks have noted above, there are people coming in from dozens of different boards and forums with wildly different expectations (some places you can start topics, some places you can't, etc.), and it's going to take a long time to figure out an approach that more or less works. I can guarantee that people who are looking for stuff not to like will find plenty, and hey, there are things about the current limitations that drive me nuts too.
The thing is, we'll never get to that better place if we don't experiment and find what does and doesn't work. For instance, consider what the place would be like if all comments required moderation, which was one of the options briefly considered (and, thank God, dismissed as a nonstarter pretty early on).
As izzie suggests, striking a balance between those who want a topic-starting free-for-all and those who think we've already got too many is an issue we're grappling with and one that will never have a perfect solution. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
It will never be perfect. With your constructive help, it will get better. Thank you.
just for you, CCJoe. I'm cutting and pasting from OceanRiver's post.
OceanRiver said: in your shows and songs part under the concert listings, i'll find mistakes here and there...
OceanRiver, please send corrections to the show database to Jonthan Lane (that's his user id here on the system.) He'll get to 'em!
Soeharto - you said you were leaving, and that you were gone. I simply wished you happiness in another online forum where you can start topics! That's a far cry from suggesting you go else where to be happy! I'm sorry the current configuration of this site isn't what you'd like it to be. but if you're not happy here...... why stay?
For each person who wants to be able to create topics as desired, we have people who think there are already too many topics and that things should be more consolidated.
Well, I see that some of the crew from the new/old Groupee forums has made it over here. There was a nice vibe going with most of the members on that forum site so I hope it will continue. This site looks pretty good but I'm sure it will only get better with time.
Do or do not; there is no try.
