I'm a professor of philosophy at Hofstra University where I host and produce a weekly show, 'The Dead Zone.' I posted a link to the radio station, WRHU, 88.7FM, Radio Hofstra University. On the show, I follow a thematic approach, each year selecting and organizing shows around a specific event, or idea. For example, when Giants Stadium was 'retired' in Feb 2010, we devoted the entire year of 2010 to listening to all of the Dead's performances at the venerable football stadium off the New Jersey Turnpike. It took an entire year, but we listened to all 14 shows, complete and unedited. In 2011 our theme was 'The Dead and Friends, ' which was an idea that came to me after I visited the New York Historical Society's exhibit of the Dead's archives in Summer 2010. The one gap I found in the exhibit was any archival record of the many times the Dead were joined on stage by a friend or two. So in 2011 we listened to many of the shows that featured friends of the band. July was Dead and Dylan month, where we listened to all those July 87 shows. In 2012 we commemorated the 40th anniversary of Europe 72 by listening to all those other European tour performances, i.e, from 1974, 1981, and 1990. 2103 explored and compared the years 1973, 1983, 1993. 2014 explored the Wall of Sound. 2015 and 2016 have been comparative listening to tunes across the decades. The show is on WRHU.ORG, 88.7FM, Sundays, 6-8pm EST. TUNE in!
