Such a great show...

My bro sent me on a quest a while back to find a good copy of this show. This was his first Dead show, and he told me it was awesome!

I found some cassette tapes, but the quality was horrible.

This soundboard is amazing, but unfortunately my finding was timed poorly, I suppose.

This was my bro's first show. He died in 2008 prior to my knowledge of this wonderfully preserved soundboard.

I miss my brother Mike. He was a wonderful person, and I hope that he can hear these wonderful songs, wherever he may be today.

I am sad but happy.

30 Days of Dead Volume 1

Dear people, brothers and sisters,

I love love love these songs. Seeing the album cover says Volume 1 does this mean there will be other volumes in the future?

Thank you so much for sharing the love of the music.

Peace and love in abundance

From that perspective

This would be 30 Days of the Dead Vol 2, since last year would have been Vol 1. However, since these will eventually break down into 5 cds give-or-take, I think that the "vol 1" on the cover is just referring to "CD 1"...at least that's what I assumed when I saw it.

Think of how nice it would be to be getting 30 days of the Dead (or 31, or 29 -- leap year coming) each and every month. Oh my, how greedy can I be?

At the 1/3 of 30 mark, I'm just gonna say you guys have really outdone yourselves! If all this gloriousness was to stop right now, you've already far eclipsed last year's 30 Days in my mind. Quality stuff guys; keep it coming. Its so much appreciated! Cheers and thanks again to the Dead, not only the greatest, but the most generous rock'n'roll band ever!

Ironic....

Oddly enough, I was downloading/taping this show yesterday, and finished up the 3rd set this morning.

This was my brother's first show. I was only 5 years old at the time and didn't see GD until 6/30/88 at Silver Stadium in Rochester.

Kinda, gotta believe that CM knows his stuff :-)
Nice to see you on this forum CM!

I was just pouring thru my Bird Song inventory on iTunes and realized that after this show (which I have thx to CM) the next one I have is 9/24/80 at the warfield. That is a 7 year gap! Anyone have the list of any Bird Song's in the days between if they exist? Just curious...

Dead.net should make this a round the year thing... must drive some good eyeballs to the site. It is lots of fun to research in personal and online archives to get the answers.

Hey now, check this website out. The apparent choice wasn't mentioned !

Most importantly, this song was written in memory of Janis Joplin. RIP

I'll be very surprised if what's already been guessed is right

while i do not claim to be even remotely as knowledgeable as anyone on here, but i did a side by side and i feel confident that my guess is correct....and it's not the one mentioned..i selected one about 7-8 months earlier....it just sounded spot on....but again...i am about as rookie as there are on these matters....

I listened to the Music Hall version from 10/26/72, twice: it's a good version too.

I am amazed that I was wrong...keep in mind I am a newbie at guessing shows...but i did a side by side and this one seemed dead on....wow

intro

The lead-in before the singing begins on 10/30/72 is at about 40 seconds vs. about 22 seconds on this version. All the '72 versions I checked were like that.

Plus there is a little piano part that happens right about 8:00 on the 6/10/73 version that matches perfectly with the LMA sources.

Diggin' the Jerry Tunes!

I'm loving the fact that there are a lot more Jerry tunes this year. Last year there was more Bobby, and I'm not complaining, but it's nice to see it's Papa Bear heavy this year! :)

Great version from a great show

There are a few tracks from this show in the Taper's Section, including this Bird Song. I was lucky enough to download them when it was first started and enjoyed the hell out of them on my mp3 player during a camping trip - it was my own way of tipping the hat to TDIH. I've had a great time playing this guess the date game, thanks for the helping hints sometimes. I would have gotten THIS one on my own because I'm so familiar, but thanks. I have gotten a few on my own with my Deadbase X and the Archive.

But this one sounds just a little bit sweeter...

than the one that we downloaded from the Taper's Section (even though we later learned that we were not supposed to download those!). The slight improvement in sound quality is probably due to the fact that this one has a bitrate of 320kbps whereas the one on the Taper's Section was 192kbps. In any case it is a fine rendition of a fine song.

Try this!

I'm sure most people have already experimented with playing songs on two seperate players, but this Bird Song is great for that. Set one a split second later and you get an echo sort of effect. Swirling solos and machine gun drums. Of course Dark Star creates the best effect.

That's cool. It's even better when the two versions are precisely in time and all you have to do is turn the volume up and down on each to confirm you have the right match.

Unique classic

I remember this being one of my first tapes. It was pretty widely circulated, and was great quality. This one threw me off as first, because it is so unique. Jerry just starts the melody line intro straight off. Scanning the shows I have from this era, this is the only Bird Song that starts this way. Interesting deviation from the norm, but I just I would expect that from these guys.

Thanks David, nice choice.

Now, where is that monster Eyes of the World you guys are holding back?

Went stir crazy figuring out which show this was from. Just realized today that Bird Song went dormant from Sept 73 thru Sept 80 went it returned during the Warfield Saenger and Radio City acoustic sessions.

Not '71

Not sure where everyone is getting the '71 from. No version from '71 is even remotely long enough and there are NOT two drummers on this. My guess is late '72 but I haven't had enough time to investigate this.

A few folks are zeroing in on

A few folks are zeroing in on '71 because they're getting hung up on being too literal with one of the hints earlier. Listening very closely to the backing vocals on this track should cure that.

Hmmm... how to tell?

I think I have it down to a stretch of four shows... but they played Bird Song at all four. The first show of the stretch was the song's debut, and this one sounds like they had maybe played it once or twice before... hmm. Happy hunting! This is a lot of fun :)

Anyway the DRUMS

Yeah and anyway, listen to the DRUMS - you have to go ahead a few months to hear that style from Billy (I think - I'm struggling with this one). I was sure that I had the tour nailed down from the first few seconds of the song, and I still think I do, but damn if I can find the exact version. :-)

Wow this Bird Song jam is one of the tightest I have ever heard. Billy is playing like a "young God" and Bob/Phil/Jer/Keith are completely dialed in on the same wave. Incredible.
