    Have I heard that?
I have. This I guess represents a late 'peak', with Jerry's voice about as recovered as it would ever get (still stiff and brittle, mind you) - this has some good energy, but arrives this way by a general piling on of 2 keyboardists and 2 guitars, rather than by subtler means. I listen to post-coma Dead once or twice a year, and that's enough for me.

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from three distinct periods in Grateful Dead history, much as we did last week, but with a couple of different years thrown in, from 1977, 1984, and 1994.

Our first selection this week is from the cool October tour through the south and southwest, with music from 10/7/77 in Albuquerque, NM: Ramble On Rose ; Passenger ; Terrapin Station > Playing In The Band.

Next is the tour-opening set from the Fall Tour of 1984, on 10/5/84 in Charlotte, NC, where we have Bertha > The Promised Land ; West L.A. Fadeaway; Little Red Rooster; Dupree's Diamond Blues ; My Brother Esau; Brown Eyed Women ; Feel Like A Stranger; Might As Well.

Lastly this week is the start of the second set from 10/1/94 in Boston, a great show from the Fall Tour of 1994: Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Way To Go Home ; Saint Of Circumstance > Terrapin Station.

Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from deep within the Grateful Dead’s vault.

F%CK YEA "Terrapin Station" from 10.7.77 is certainly not one of their finer performances of this tune. I was checking this out recently , surprisingly for a 1977 performance

While I love much of Fall '77, it seems coked up monstrous and sloppy at times. On Road Trips, that last Help > Slip for five and a half years is rushed, lacks detail snd precision. Avoid.

If only the Dave's series was a quarter as diverse as this series. Can you imagine a Dave's Pick from '84? No, me either.

"While I love much of Fall '77, it seems coked up monstrous and sloppy at times.... Avoid" Really? This is a fucked up Terrapin, for sure. Shit happens. The batting average for hot shows in fall 77 is in the 900s. That stat for 1984 is in the 300s, maybe. The post-drums of this show is spectacular and contains a top-5 all time great Sugar Magnolia. If steering clear of shows that might have been better if not for the drugs is your criterion, I assume you listen to NOTHING after what? 1980? 1982? I would remind you that Jerry had ruined his beautiful singing voice by 1983, and it NEVER gets better. Yeah, fall '77 is a coked/smacked-up beast, but I would maintain that nobody's done any permanent damage yet. Still lots of power, energy, strength, imagination, plain give-a-shitedness left. Personally I can't spin anything after 85. Lacking "detail"? Well. That might be over-rated. The resurrected H-S-F's lack a band that's really capable of playing the song anymore.

I love much of Fall '77. We can leave it at that. I didn't mean to suggest avoiding anything except that HSF specifically and that RT generally. Englishtown, Austin, Dekalb, Rochester, and much more, superb.
