Road Trips Vol. 1 Number 4

"From Egypt With Love" (October '78)

2 Disc Set

Since we’ve all been in deep Egypt Mode the last couple of months preparing the new Rhino release Rocking the Cradle: Grateful Dead, Egypt ’78 (which you can learn more about and order here), we thought it would be cool for the new Road Trips (that’s Vol. 1, No. 4 for those of you keeping score at home) to be a companion to that release, compiled from the band’s famous October 1978 “From Egypt With Love” shows at Winterland in San Francisco, just a month after their return from the desert.

Here’s the deal: The group was feeling totally jazzed when they got back from Egypt, and Bill Graham, who had been on the trip abroad as a spectator, rather than as promoter, wanted to give the band’s hometown fans a taste of the Egypt experience by hosting a series of five shows at Winterland that would include a slide show depicting the group’s amazing adventures in Cairo and beyond. As it turned out, the Dead Heads got more than that, too: At two of the concerts, their good friend Hamza El Din (a Nubian musician living in the Bay Area) reprised the Egyptian song he’d sung at the Sound & Light Theater in Gizah—called “Ollin Arageed”—which had been a jumping–off point for some fascinating cross-cultural explorations between the Dead and a host of native singers and percussionists. It proved to be magical at Winterland, too, as the crowd joined in clapping the song’s unusual and hypnotic beat. War’s exceptional harmonica player, Lee Oskar, dropped by the last two nights of the run, and the final concert brought a surprise appearance by ex-Quicksilver guitarist John Cipollina.

This new Road Trips was culled from the the last two concerts of the series, October 21 and 22, 1978. There’s plenty to dig here, including a really dynamic extended take on the aforementioned “Ollin Arageed” which eventually lands at “Deal” (of all songs!); a stunning sequence featuring "Got My Mojo Working">"The Other One">"Stella Blue"; a generous and free-flowing “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain”; and a “Not Fade Away” > “Goin’ Down the Road” combo that’s sparked by the presence of Mr. Cipollina and his vampire bat Gibson SG, and which goes into some very interesting jamming spaces between songs.

This is a wonderful project . I ve been an owner of all 5 Winterland shows , thanks to a good taper friend from OH , since 1998 - Thanks Chad . Some of those 5 nights were stellar . Or at least some portions of the shows were as Latvala would say Primal Dead .

Im glad to see the best of the best of that very good run . And the new musical ideas it brought back , from Egypt .

I always knew the band must ve been very priviliged to play their music in such a sacred place

This project is just eactly perfect , as the late Dick L would ve said .

p.s. Being a head from Chile but lived in the US for 16 years , in Machu Picchu , chilean band Los Jaivas played in 1982 , after similarly to Cairo . Being selected by Peruvian authorities very rigidly . As that archaeological park is quite similar , in anthropological terms as are the pyramids in Gizah . And as well would be Chichen Itzah or the Pyramid of the sun in mexico

Seek out Las alturas de Machu Picchu by Los jaivas if interested in that musical project

p.s. happy nniversary of Veneta

looking forward to this

I also have all five shows in full - but still looking forward to this release. The 21st is famous - as has already been noted - for Dick Latvala's comments in Deadbase XI: "Perhaps the most exciting show on the West Coast since the late 60s...." with The Other One being "arguably the most incredible version… since the 60s." I also love the 22nd show - as I write, I'm listening to set 2 of that show - there's a wonderful Caution Jam (first for four years) and a Mojo Jam (last ever) in the transition from NFA to GDTRB.

Friends and I were at the 21st show, one of the best I ever saw! Mojo>Other One>Stella is epic. Other one is the closest I've heard Jerry to heavy metal! Then Jerry turns the runaway freight train he's made of Other One into the butterfly of Stella. Hope the SBD is complete!

Thinking about this Eygpt release

How good is the dvd footage? I have all dvd releases already.I am waiting for a release in blue-ray and DTS sound. What is holding you guys back.I thought you would embrace these new technologies. Whats up? when can I expect a release like this.Patiently waiting.

Road Trips 1.4

avatar

Well yes I did order Road Trips 1.4 in the complete package with Egypt and the T.

I have the last three nights of that run 20, 21, 22, excellent SBDs remastered by Joe Miller, great shows and the selections for the release on 1.4 are all smoking. Makes a nice compilation for when you don't have the time to listen to all three shows back to back.

But it sure would have been nice to see complete shows.

If you guys at Rhino are reading this listen up.

We the fans who buy these great, high quality CD, and appreciate the hard work that goes into putting them together, would really, really love to see complete shows released. Box sets with the ability to purchase one complete show at a time for those of us who are still scraping pennies together.

So if you wouldn't mind make the next release the complete Radio City Music Hall run from 1980. All shows, all sets, all songs.

Thanks.

"When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

Couldn’t agree with you

Couldn’t agree with you more; Radio City Music Hall 1980 would be sweet.

As for Vol. Number 4, I placed my order a week ago. I’m really looking forward to it because this is my first Road Trips purchase…fingers crossed.

I was starting to get really excited that a SBD patch surfaced and would give us a complete version to this song for 10.21 but reading Blair's posts put an end to my hopes. So I dont see much of a point to releasing this set even though it is incredible.

Yes!

is one of my favorite moments of Grateful Dead ever.

(I cut and pasted the titles from above... hopefully the name of Hamza's song is spelled correctly on the CD?)
