Ah yes, the glorious year of 1977, a favorite of discerning Dead Heads for three decades now! For the second volume in our new Road Trips series, we’ve chosen another tour that was not tapped previously through Dick’s Picks—a blazing swing through the Southwest, Colorado and down to Louisiana during the first weeks of October 1977.
This was a great time for the band: Both the years-in-the-making Grateful Dead Movie and the new Terrapin Station album had come out a few months earlier and the group was riding high on momentum from both of those projects. There was exciting new material that had debuted at the beginning of the year, including “Estimated Prophet,” “Terrapin” and “Fire on the Mountain,” and steady touring through the spring allowed the band to really explore the nuances of the new repertoire, while they also continued to hone the material that had come in following the band’s return to the stage in mid-1976 after their hiatus. What you’ll find on these great-sounding discs is a mixture of old favorites played with that fabled ’77 energy, and more recent material that was hitting new peaks nightly. There’s a “Let It Grow” that will knock your tie-dyed socks off, one of the great versions of “Sugaree” of that or any year, the famous “Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower” from Norman, Oklahoma, epic workouts on “Playing in the Band” and “The Other One” and a jammed-out “Black Peter” for the ages. Hot stuff!
Once again, the discs have been lovingly compiled and painstakingly mastered (in HDCD) from the original master tapes (in this case reels) by Jeffrey Norman. The booklet that accompanies the CDs boasts scads of great photos from the era and a very cool historical essay by the ever-hip and erudite scribe Steve Silberman.

Yawn
Wow, another compilation, how underwhelming. I see that Rhino is really pulling out all the stops with the vast amount of material in the vault.
WTF, how many times do fans have to ask for COMPLETE SHOWS before we actually get one?! And dare I even mention the thought of a new video release? Nah, Rhino would probably make it a video compilation!
Vol one number two
i will order it it seems a lot better than the first
but why vol one still, what is the connection between the the two sets

Spanish Jam
everybody just chill
Hate to rain on everybody's self righreousness, but I think the Road trips concept is a good one - cherry picking the best jams from notable tours. They've promised more full shows to come, in the meantime this is the second fresh release in four months, and who ever had full shows back in the day anyway - many of my tapes just had the "big jam" of any given night.
Road Trips
Eloquently, elegantly, and well said, Rick(Gratefulhan).
It's as if the producers of these compilations have decided that whole, complete Grateful Dead shows aren't in and of themselves worthy of our full attention - or we are not worthy of them. Either way it all seems a bit frivolous to me. And sacrilegious.
When they bring back the whole show flow, they'll bring back my interest. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

What A Shame
These listening party tracks are some hot takes indeed, but it is hard for me to enjoy fully when pulled so far out of their context. The Dead never opened a show or a set (so far as I know) with "Let It Grow", and it shows here...it sounds like a set closer (as it actually was on 10/11/77)....same with "Music Never Stopped" (set closer 10/16/77)....
We have probably all tried making "perfect' Dead mixes with no low points, overly familiar songs etc, only to realize that it really was the unique "energy" and build of each set, that really carried the music. Isolating these great takes from their context is not where its at, and I think Rhino is making a big mistake by going at things from this angle.
Secondly, while Rhino is a record company, it should consider getting on board with making its Dead releases available for download. To channel us all into buying the CD, even after a good stretch of time has passed (example: Live at the Cow Palace 1976) is not a winning strategy.
Come on Rhino
Respect the noble task you have undertaken
Oh my, I didn't know people
Oh my, I didn't know people could whine so much. Here is what they have to offer, it sounds excellent, if you don't like it, don't buy it. I've bought every Dicks Picks, Every view from the vault, every vault release, every cd that's been put out. And all the DVD's too. Some are complete shows, some are not. Road Trips will not be complete shows. That doesn't make the music any less excellent. You can still trade you know...
Bonjour from France ! Ohhhhh
Bonjour from France !
Ohhhhh please, COMPLETE shows !!!!!
Laurent
Complete shows
And the grateful Dead members sold the vaults to these people ?
I am sorry but this is a disgrace. They think they just run a marketing business ? do Rhino have any idea of what it is they are doing ?
Taking October 1977 into a compilation is not acceptable.
Release October 1977 and we shall buy it all.
grateful Dead fans cannot be treated this way. I am sorry but now i am really upset. I didn't like the road trip concept from the beginning. But using this outstanding vintage that is 77 to get more customers is shocking.
be careful Rhino, dead customers can get organised and boycott these releases. A parallel trade market can easily be implemented. So please respect us. Enough said!
Oh dear
Well, as a UK deadhead who was unable to get Road Trips 1, because - so I was told - the US postal system could not recognise my UK address (like, doh!), as I was treated rudely by the store support staff, and as I have all the shows on these discs anyway, all I have to say is
Fergeddabaht it, fergeddabaht it, fergeddabaht it
Gotta Bear With It
I'm not worried about this series being compilations, but I thought that volume 1 of the series was Just Awful. This volume seems to be more along my line, so I'm going to get it and "keep the faith" with Rhino ... after all, if these releases don't make a profit, they may well decide that there's no future in them at all. I think that Rhino is going to take a look at the fan reaction on threads like this and at least question how to take the series forward.
On the subject of the store (because it's been mentioned a couple of times) I queried the overseas shipping cost on The Vault and never got a response. It wasn't a major problem (I have a family member in the US who could order it for me) but I wonder from what's been said if the ball isn't occasionally getting dropped there. So long as the site-only bonus discs keep coming, I don't imagine it'll make much difference.
