Road Trips Volume 1 - Number 3

More Lost and Found From the Hot, Hot Summer of’71 on this Two-Disc Set!

If you’re up on your Dick’s Picks releases—and we know you are—you’ll recall that Dick’s Picks 35, released in 2005, featured some smokin’ performances from the summer of 1971. The master reels from which it was culled, long believed to have been lost, had turned up miraculously on a houseboat owned by the parents of former GD keyboardist Keith Godchaux, discovered more than 30 years later by Keith’s brother, Brian, and son, Zion. And Keith had these masters because the band wanted him to be able to hear their most recent tour in preparation for his taking the piano seat that fall. It was quite a find, to say the least—the Grateful Dead world equivalent of uncovering a new royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

So imagine our surprise when two years later, under completely different circumstances, even more great, previously uncirculated master tapes from the summer of ’71 turned up unexpectedly. Surely that was a sign, too, that this music needed to come out and be shared with all of you. Which brings us, happily, to Road Trips Volume One, Number 3. This release offers up the brightest of these recently discovered gems: Disc One is taken from the famous show at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, July 31, 1971, anchored around an out-of-this-world “Dark Star” and a version of “Not Fade Away > Goin’ Down the Road” that also includes a short “Darkness, Darkness” jam. Hot stuff!

The material on Disc Two is from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago about three weeks later—8/23/71 (the following night, 8/24, was spotlighted on DP35)—and its big highlight is probably the very jammed out version of “That’s It for the Other One,” which in my humble opinion stands with the best they ever played (yes, even ones from the Fillmore West box). Spread across the discs you’ll also find outstanding versions of “China Cat > Rider,” “Uncle John’s Band > Johnny B. Goode,” “Wharf Rat,” “Sugar Magnolia” and lots more. Like the DP35 performances, these are a Phil-lover’s-delight, with massive bass on almost every track—careful if you’re driving or operating heavy machinery when you crank up these CDs!

As usual, these master soundboard recordings have been mastered in HDCD, and each package includes a cool booklet with an essay about the music (by yours truly in this case) and plenty o’ rare photos from the period.

what I hope for

avatar

what I hope for are more complete runs of several complete shows, rather than the bits and pieces dics.

like, for example, Tower Theater, Darby, Pennsylvania June/76

ok, sure they repeated some songs over the 4 nights, but it is still a pretty good run.

or, hows about the London shows from March/81. that would make a really cool inside book if there are candid shots of the boys out on the town in jolly old England...

or the Greek from July 84... (ok, you can cut the Why Don't We do it In the Road from the disc, though... ( -; yuk yuk yuk )

or the monster run from September at MSG in 88; including the Rainforest benefit the last night of that run.

just some idears.

peace.

I Second That Emotion

I agree with the previous post. 6/76 from Upper Darby is in desperate need of sonic liberation. What a release that would be. Complete would be ideal, but a Road Trips would be bought up in a nano sec

Just got it.

Wow that was really quick. When you're having one of those, "Boss is on vacation AGAIN weeks," and its still snowing, it was really nice to see package at PO this morning. Let me just say I'm younger and never got to see the Grateful Dead, but as it turns out they are my favorite band of all time. I wasn't sure about getting the Road Trips series but I'm so glad I did. To me its like the modern bootleg series, people on here complain about the package which I think is perfect. (The package not the complaining.)Not sure but it seems to be composed of recycled material, which if true is cool to try to get a little more Earth friendly, we don't need jewell cases. So its like just hooking of with some ole' dead tribe from way back that have these good bootlegs, a couple of the people do GD inspired drawings, paintings, have taken good snap shots of the Band live during these shows, and have put together these kinda cheap but cool, personalized bootlegs to distribute. Better than some cassette tape thats gonna be worn out in a month with just the track listing scratched on the sleeve. The essays are great , just to read from people who were there, to see the band, to hear them grow and make the music we love to hear. I just love the history, the ins and outs of the band and the ways they were willing to change and stay true to the music and the fans. I picked up No.2 and No.3 and you will definitely get your money's worth here as the sound is crisp and clean, and I have only listened to disk 1 of RTV1No.2. Sugaree is my all time favorite GD song and I like the different long jam version here on RTV1NO2. So hopefully I'll have time, after I've soaked it in my skin the rest of the weekend to write more about the tunes. Can't wait for the 71 stuff, must have got one of the last DP 35 and have been loving that the last couple months. Because when the styles can change from, Jerry to Bob to PigPen its just great, keeps you on the edge of your seat, plus the power of Phil, the precision of Bill pounding those drums, that original core shake it shake it shake it. Thanks keep em coming.

Very nice sound

I'm listening to disk 1 and I have to say the sound quality and the performance are great. I was also listening to Sing Me Back Home off the bonus disk yesterday on my crappy car stereo and it sounded like billy was playing drums in my back seat. I don't like the crappy packaging, not everyone just listens to MP3 and the disk's are difficult to get out but the sound quality is amazing. Very nice job Jeffrey Norman and company.

Road Trips shoots ....

SCORES!!! Road Trips #3 slips one by the goalie at the end of the first period, Aye?

I look forward to getting mine

But please do something about the packaging. You can't get discs out of the Roadtrips series without almost ripping the packages or putting your fingers on the surface of the disc. I applaud your effort to use a low impact package but that should also be consumer friendly. I have found a style of packaging that seems to deal with both in a disc I just got it is Yonder Mountain String Band -Mountain Tracks:Volume 5. There is just the cardboard cover and then a piece of foam type material that fits the the whole in the disc. I urge you to check it out. I have bought all three Roadtrips but would be very happy to see you change your method of packaging to one that is easier to handle. By the way because some people do not like the style of packaging they will place the discs in other slevees or disc trays thus negating the purpose of being environmentally friendly because they now have used two packages. Otherwise keep up the good work.

Got mine today

A sunny Saturday morning in rural South West Wales, and my copy slipped through the letter box an hour ago. All the way to the UK in under a week. Listening to the DS as I write - what a way to start the weekend. Thanks to all - but do PLEASE address the packaging issue: I am one of those who puts each disc in a separate plastic sleeve (I've done this for the 1969 box set, RTs 1 & 2, and the recent Winterland set) - for ease of handling and for greater protection - the cardboard sleeves scratch the hell out of the discs

Great CD - listening to it right now - sounds great

Caution: Flammable!!

This is easily one of the best recordings from the Pigpen Era! Just got my copy and it feels like an old shoe! Order now for the bonus cd! The best "Big Boss Man" and "Hard to Handle" I've heard, and I've heard a few! Smokin' stuff!
