2 Disc Set + Bonus Disc
To kick off Volume 2 of our Road Trips series, we're making our first foray into the '90s-specifically, the extraordinary Madison Square Garden run from September of 1990!
You'll recall the unusual historical circumstances surrounding this famous series of shows: In July, Brent Mydland had died tragically after a glorious 11-year stint as the Dead's keyboardist. With both the band and Dead Heads in shock, a few planned summer shows were cancelled, and it looked as though the group's long-scheduled tour of Europe might be in jeopardy, as well. But then, two things happened: friend and fellow traveler Bruce Hornsby, already well-versed in the band's music, volunteered to venture into the breach temporarily once his summer tour was over; next, the group settled on former Tubes keys man Vince Welnick to step into Brent's big shoes on a permanent basis. Fortunately, he was a quick study! By early September, Vince had played his first shows with the Dead (in Cleveland and Philadelphia), and then the band moved on to Madison Square Garden -- always one of the most magical places the group played-- for a series of six shows spanning September 14-20, before jetting off for the big European tour.
Bruce joined the band beginning with the second concert in that series, and immediately the chemistry of this new septet was apparent. Bruce was a bold and assertive player who really pushed the band--and particularly Garcia--in some fascinating new directions, and the combination of his grand piano and Vince's electronic keyboard textures made for a big and dynamic sound. There were smiles all around as the new unit found its footing and with surprising confidence ushered in a new era of Grateful Dead music before roaring New York crowds!
Back in 1997, our late, great vaultmaster Dick Latvala pegged the September 16, 1990 Garden show to be Dick's Picks Vol. 9, but many fans of the run have long believed that the hottest shows from MSG that year were actually the two concluding concerts, September 19 and 20. So, for this Road Trips we offer some two-and-a-half hours of high energy rock 'n' roll and intense jamming from the second sets of 9/19-20 (as well as the moving "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" encore from 9/18). Included are spacey and beautifully developed journeys through "Dark Star" and "Playing in the Band"; a rare second set "Let It Grow" that rolls into a fantastic improvisation that really shows off the chops of the "new" band; a rousing "Uncle John's Band"; rockin' tunes like "Truckin'" and "Turn on Your Lovelight," and more. The spirit and life on these tracks is amazing! You can find the entire track listing below. As always, the discs have been expertly mastered to HDCD by our own Jeffrey Norman, and the package includes a 16-page booklet with lots o' groovy pix and an essay about the shows by Dan Levy.

Four numbers per volume, I guess
I haven't really determined what else ties a volume together, except Vol. 1 was all '70's - later '70s except No. 3. I like that this number focuses on just a couple of shows from a run at a single venue like V1N4, instead of bouncing around venues on a tour. I was hoping for a full show(s) release out of the MSG '90 run. Hornsby was (is?) awesome with the Dead.
Good job overall, folks, didn't see it coming makes for a nice Xmas surprise.

So friggin' lame
Why almost the complete stellar second set from 9/20, but instead with a piece of 9/19 sandwiched in to create some mutant set that never happened?
Why not just release the entire second set from 9/20, and then throw in some more tasty chunks on additional discs.
I'm sure people would have loved to see and gladly purchased a 4 or 6 disc set from this long, great run (assuming they can get the pitch correct for a change)!
I was at every night of this run (and every MSG show, for that matter); this was a very solid run, in no small part due to the appearance of Bruce. He really kicked Jerry in the ass. Check out the Rider from 9/20 for one of the hottest breaks ever!
Maybe one day Rhino will figure out what we really want. As stated previously, these shows are already available in execellent quailty, and not Frankenstein sets. Where are the shows that don't commonly circulate? Do we already have everything? If so, then we don't need Rhino.

It's nice to be in the Late 80's early 90's again - which is my favorite era. Been listening on-line for about a 1/2 hour now and the sound is unbelievable. Ordered and can't wait to get it.
As far as the people complaing about not having the "Full Shows" again. I think all of us would like that but maybe there are reasons they can't give to us (lost tapes, damaged tapes etc.) So please stop complaining I for one am sick of reading about it. THEY KNOW WE WANT FULL SHOWS now lay off them.
But when they do a full show how about Boston, 09/26/91
I am both elated and
I am both elated and dissapointed by this release.Sept 20 1990 should be a full show release on it's own!! The 1st set was as blistering as the 2nd and is totally omitted here.I know you can't keep everybody happy but this entire run would make a great Boxed set! Rogue
Road Trips
Are that many people interested in these mix and match releases? There used to be full shows released and the monthly downloads available. For those of us with so many shows in our catalogs what is the point of these partial shows being released? Is this for the newer listeners who are looking for anything? I just don't get it and would love to know what Bobby, Phil, Mickey and Bill really think about these releases. Big Moe in Wisconsin
Suggestion to permanently include bonus disc
I would like to recommend that you permanently release the bonus cd as part of the three disc set; even if it means raising the price. From a consumer's point of view, when I see that I missed out on having a great third disc, like the last one with the rare, "If I had the World to Give," it makes me feel like I'm getting less than the complete package; Especially because the bonus disc is so closely related to the main part of the package. I bought the last one for a friend with only the two discs and I felt apologetic that I didn't have the third to offer.
Deer Creek
Why is it that all the Dead heads and Grateful Dead family never acknowledge the 1990 Deer Creek shows as the finest example of the musicianship of the Dead?
I have heard all of the different version and sounds of the Dead from 1965 until now
Never have I ever heard the Dead sound better than the 90' Deer Creek shows.
Why can't we get a fucking release that represents the Dead at the peak of their playing ability?
Enough of the stupid Pigpen and Keith/Donna era, Bring on some Brent dammit.
Argue the point if you think you know something about the music. But before you do, go and listen to the first set of the 7/19/90, it is not the best choice of songs but the playing is the finest example of what can happen when 6 guys have been playing the same songs for 11 years. From the time Brent joined the band until the summer of1990 the music got better and better each year. Yeah, Bruce is freakin awesome but Brent was the man.
So for the love of God, can we please get some 1979-1990 stuff released?????
very good track lists
IM glad that gdp is venturing slowly but surely into 1990 s qualitative moments of this band
This installment looks like a very good selection , all the way around .
DVDs
DVDs PLEASE.
pretty please with sugar on top.
Views from the vault, back stage antic videos, home videos, old concert film converted to DVD. I want DVDs. digital quality surround sound, remastered whatever.
I would take a complilation of any video, but personally I don't dig the compilation CDs, horses for courses on that, to each his own.
I would, however, want a full show DVD more than any compilation.
