Gonna get me a Courtland Woman
It was spring of 1971 and my roommate at Stony Brook and best friend Lenny decided on a beautiful April weekend that we needed a Dead fix so I had fired up my 1965 white Mustang from Stony Brook and Lenny and I headed up to Courtland with no tickets. On Sunday morning on our way to Lusk’s Field House in Courtland we picked up two Cornell girls hitching to the show- we all piled into my car- girls in back guys in front- Lenny and I had dropped some purple owsley acid and were flying when we got there while the girls looked at us kind of strange. They said they’d meet us back at he car after the show- so we were on our own looking for a Courtland woman or two. The acid came on nice and mellow the Riders were so mellow - I could feel the steel pedal and and Marmaduke's vocals washed right through me.
I think the set list went something like this: Six days on the Road/Running Back to you/P(C)ortland Woman/Dirty Business/Garden of Eden/I Don’t Know You/Henry/Louisiana Lady/Last Lonely Eagle for the encore The intermission was filled with frisbee, running, dancing and laughing - then The Grateful Dead just appeared on stage and things began to get intense-. Phil’s bass was thunderous and we had to fire up some doobies to mellow out. The Dead and kicked ass- the show went something like this: - 04/18/71 Lusk Field House, S.U.C.N.Y - Cortland, NY Set 1: Cold Rain And Snow Me And My Uncle Bertha Me And Bobby McGee Next Time You See Me China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Casey Jones Set 2: Sugar Magnolia Second That Emotion Truckin' Hard To Handle Loser Playin' In The Band Around And Around Good Lovin' Drums Good Lovin' Uncle John's Band After the show we were too high to drive and the Cornell girls took one look at us and ran away. Then the pigs showed up and told me that I had to move my car or it would be towed. I swear it was only midnight or so and they were getting ready to roll up the sidewalks in this little college town. So we smoked some more weed and some opiated hash and considered our options. With no choice I climbed into the driver's seat and fired that sucker up and it was a three speed manual transmission - fortunately there was not much traffic and driving through the mountain passes, chasing the moon behind the clouds, with the diamonds jumping off of the road under the headlights I started to feel safe until we got to the bright lights at Cornell University- then the road just started to roll up into this smiling purple dragon that showed us back to Cornell.
All in all it was wonderful - the only thing that would have been better would have been if we had hooked up with those two very nice ladies but they weren't even into smoking any pot- oh well- at least the music never stopped.

    this was an acid party
My friends from Cornell invited me to attend. This was a memorable show. The closest to the acid test I have ever been.New Riders with Jerry and then GD. Oh Yeah! There were big nets and everybody was dressed in whole made clothes and costumes. I was a tiger for a while.
