    Dead in Roanoke, Virginia 1974

My first Dead show as I was still in high school! I remember them opening with Bertha and them doing an extended jam with an awesome drum solo off of Playing in the Band! My best friend worked at the Roanoke Civic Center and he said that the Dead could not get all of their sound system in the civic center! lol! My brother came to the show in a tuxedo as he took his girlfriend to her prom! lol! I mention that as my brother has passed on to the next world. Totally awesome show! Don’t remember an encore but there could have been one as we got a bottle of Rock n Rye in the show but that Playing in the Band! WOW! They came here again in 1987 for two shows and I saw both! See my comment about those shows!

There is a lot of controversy as to whether it was played, no recording has ever surfaced. Can you remember if it was played? Thanks

This was my very first Dead show, and a mind-altering/life-altering evening it was! I finally understood my deadhead friends. Have a vague recollection of asking someone if Garcia was God halfway through the first set...he had this, well, mind control over everyone...taking us up, and out to space, and down, and back up again...

I was in Lynchburg visiting some college friends and we decided to head over and yes the tix were cheap. Nice night! I still visit Roanoke from time-to-time. And I remember it well.

A few months ago I was telling my son about this show, as we listened to the GD radio show channel 57 on XM. Then I was in the car this past Saturday night, and they were playing this show - I freaked! I was glad to hear it, it had been so long ago, I did not remember the set. Of course I had just graduated from high school in June, 18 yr old in the summer at a Dead concert- no wonder I don't remember the set! mc1

Three friends stopped my by house in Tazewell and proceeded to inform me that we were going to see the Dead. I will never forget the first chords of Bertha and Jerry in his black t-shirt. What an unforgettable night!!!
