Grateful Dead at Giant's Stadium 7-9-1989

Whenever I was able to, I loved attending Dead shoes at Giant's Stadium. It was always a great show. And the party scene was phenomenal. My mother actually grew up in East Rutherford. The first time I ever went to Giant's the New Riders of the Purple Sage and Willie Nelson opened up for the Grateful Dead.

    Selfishly...
I would have preferred the recent RFK ‘89 box to be these shows since I was at these, but that release does sound great. The overzealous security at the NJ shows always kinda sucked, but these shows were fun. This show is a bit top heavy, IMO— the Shakedown, Jack Straw, West LA opening trio is my favorite part.

I jumped down to the general admission floor with dozens of other heads during Shakedown and was promptly removed from the stadium by this jerk security guard :(

Jersey was about the worst place you could see a Dead show. Watching the security guards pounce on all the poor tripped out freaks when they jumped to the field during Shakedown was a riot. Like something out of Gladiator. Shakedown and Jack Straw was a great way to start things.

I was asking this big biker dude. . . whats this song and I thought he said "spider glass" it made perfect sense till I found out it was called Built to last This was the last time they had an open tarp (no seats) on the floor. . .I got so close Phil was able to Bomb me I loved it

I remember being jammed right up front at the start of the first set. Two guys next to me started screaming for Jack Straw after Shakedown. My buddies and I joined in and much to our surprise they played it! This was a weird time- great shows all year, but the WORST scenes you could imagine. Counterfeits all over the shop, police and security cracking skulls left, right and center. Still, I'd give everything up to go back to those days now. Good times.

Great show...as usual, but really crappy seats. I was sitting one row behind Bob Euker. If I remember correctly, I got rained on. Sugar Plum

The Shakedown rocked - solid. Jack Straw was also sweet. The BEW was killer but Jerry fucked up the makin' whiskey verses. So be it. I also liked the Queen Jane and it still sounds great on my barely listenable AUD casette. I remember this as a hot but amazingly nice day. And Giants was not all that bad. Being from northern NJ it was close and everyone knew security was Nazi-like so we just steered clear. Parking lot was a blast that day! Skeletor

Visions of yellow jackets swarming the lot packed in the rubber band van looking to crack skulls. We knew their routine. Great show!

Drove from Colorado and picked up my brother for the JFK/Giants/RFK mini-tour. This show was on his birthday. Brutally hot. Had the shits all day in the parking lot - looking for porta-johns that weren't overflowing...........ugggh. So, in celebration of his birthday, me and my bro get a few balloons and bring back to the little commune established between all of our neighbors cars (ahhh - the days of camping in the lot). He takes 3 or 4 successive breaths of nitrous and let's go of his balloon and falls face first into the middle of our set-up (tables, coolers, etc.) and right onto a burning grill. He starts flopping around like a fish and I'm thinking about explaining this to next of kin. We roll him off the burning embers and he wakes up and smiles and says YEAAAHHH!!, THAT WAS AWESOME. He got cut off from balloons for the rest of the trip. What a great show. We tripped in the upper deck and watched the lower bowl oozing over the wall onto the field - what mayhem. Love the memories.......Peace

I remember I was down on the Dead. Too many shows with "new songs" that I wasn't into. I was in Albany during summer school. The Dead were playing mere hours away. Jon and I took the Hammerhead down to Jersey and the boyz rocked. The Shakedown->Jackstraw made me realize that all was good and never complained about the "new songs" again. This show is definately a keeper! Jay E. Auerbach, Esq. Hollywood, FL

They scene was crazy on lot but even more crazy when Skakedown opened and the mass of humanity poured over the wall that was as entertaining as the band, those walls were high @ Giants. The liquid was clean and the band was solid all night. Loved the Brokedown since the pay pre view from Shoreline cut out on Brokedown. We started in Buffalo and ended @ RFK this was my favorite of the summer. "Nothing to tell now, let the words be yours I am done with mine"

I was sitting up in the high sections, and I remember the lights shaking as they opened up- the light towers were bouncing to the beat- It was a little freaky to see how much they moved, and I was thinking of the sympathetic frequency that brought down the Tacoma Narrows bridge in 1940 (Famous footage of it whipping up and down then apart). I found out a recent friend was at the show, and he broke his ankle jumping over the wall at the beginning.

I can still picture the wave of heads piling over the walls as Shakedown St commenced, wild stuff. Hope no one was hurt too badly. Fine show as the band was in excellent form in 89 (rumored to be one of Weir's favorite years for the group). Also remember Jerry clapping his hands with gusto during NFA. Great times right in Bergen County.

nothing to be proud of! this was the beginning of the end for real Dead fans. I had been going to shows since the mid-70's and this '89 show was my first experiance w/ 1st or 2nd timers acting like they were owed something. "I broke the rules and got thrown out" boohoo.

Every summer I couldn't wait to hear the opening warm-up licks that Garcia would hint around with then realizing SHAKEDOWN .I think this one is great especially the Jack straw follower.

The scene sucked but the band was great. I love this set list. One of my favorites. Would love for Dave to pick some of these shows from the 80's. I know these are not to popular with the older heads but for some of us younger ones these are our great memories of Jerry.

yeah, i remember running into folks like you. it was always amazing to me that with the prevailing social norms, you guys acted like you were something more special than others because you had seen them in the 70's. Never made sense to me.
