    Fran Lewandowsi, Dennis McNally, myself

My dear friend, Fran Lewandowski, was terminally ill with leukemia. I had written a letter to the Grateful Dead's fan address in San Rafael, California. I explained how Fran had told me that he would like to see one more Dead show before he left this world. In the letter, I admitted that as much of a fan as I was of the Grateful Dead, Fran was a supremely Deadicated fan who spent many hours listening to the jams and recording every Deadhead Hour. I also let the potential reader know how much I and all of Fran's friends loved him. A couple of weeks later, I was in my kitchen, and the phone rang. "Hello?" "Hi, is this Dave Saddler?" "Yes, it is." "Dave, you wrote one hell of a letter." I was still confused as to the nature of the call. "My name's Dennis McNally. Maybe you've heard of me?" McNally!? Yes! The Grateful Dead's McNally! "You're with the Grateful Dead!," I blurted. "Well, I do publicity for them. Dave, we're up in New York, but we're going to be at RFK in a couple of weeks. How's Fran doing?" "He's actually doing pretty good," I replied. "Do you think he could go to the RFK show?" I said that since he had a Hickman catheter, he would need access to a private bathroom. "Yeah, we got that from your letter. Listen, if you think Fran can come to the show, we'll have a couple of backstage passes waiting for you." I couldn't thank him enough! And you should have seen the look of shock on Fran's face when I told him! Fran was definitely up to it. It was a hot day. We walked up to the ticket window. We showed our ID's. We got our backstage passes! I eventually took pictures of them! Fran was beaming! Dennis McNally met us and hung out with us for a little while. More pictures of us with Dennis and drinking cold brew! Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick said hello to us. Vince confided that his mother had passed away from cancer. I offered my condolences. Then, Vince asked, "So, how are you doing?" I said that Fran was a real trooper. Vince again asked, "No, I mean, how are you doing?" I said I was lucky to have a friend like Fran. And Vince said, "And I think Fran is lucky to have a friend like you." For sure, I will always miss Fran. But, without a doubt, being a friend of the Grateful Dead has always been a source of joy, comfort, and peace. God Bless the Grateful Dead!

You always hear of stories of "THE show". Well, this was THE show for me. Although I had been to several shows through the years and had already "gotten it", this was the most magical of shows. It started with running into an old friend I had not partied with in years at the bar of our hotel. The show was fantastic. The Shenandoah that Jerry played, to the train that I thought was coming through the stadium, to Casey Jones to Steve Miller playing with the boys post-space was fantastic. Vince busting out in encore is to this day my favorite memory of him.

Nice review pockyway. Lots of people love this show but it didn't really do it for me...but that train announcing Casey Jones (only time I saw that song) was a moment to remember. I recall Picasso Moon being pretty cool too.

Great show!!! We had a horrible time getting into the parking lot. It took us hours (like normal), but we missed the turn last minute and ended up in Annacostia. We ended up grilling and picnicking in this park where we found bullet casings on the ground and there was broken glass everywhere. After eating we found a parking place near a decent metro stop to ride the train in. As we were getting ready to go down some stairs to get to the train, this couple needed to make a phone call or something and left their child with us to look after. We didn't know this couple from Adam. We started to get worried after about 20 minutes. We sent some of our party ahead. We started searching for a cop to give the child to, but the parents finally showed up after about 45 minutes. We had a great time on the train. We ended up missing Steve Miller, but the show was fantastic! I loved it when Jerry played Shenandoah, and I couldn't believe how high Jerry jumped when Mickey got behind him and blared his train horn! Liz

The train horn gives me goose bumps now just thinking about it. This was my first RFK show and I remember looking around during space and being amazed at all the people. I love Bruce w/ them anytime.

This show was my one and only. I remeber going in and guys climbing up the chain link sides of RFK like an army of locust. Dosed. Miller opening and nothin else till that Train Horn seared my skull in half and I came back. It was amazing night that changed my life and the acid wasn't half bad either.

As alot of you know, the rumors of Casey Jones coming somewhere on the tour had been circulating for weeks. I can't remember now, where and when, but they had been sounding the horn at other shows, because there was alot of talk about the time "ban" on Casey Jones being over and Jerry driving that train back to DC and blaring it in the governments face. Well, I was pregnant with my daughter (so this was her first show)and we were waiting for Casey ......it was exciting to hear that train whistle blow!!!!!!!Lake

I have NO recollection of the Train Whistle! I have the bootleg and I was surprised to hear a whistle. I seriously don't remember it, how weird is that. I may have been in shock by all of the people taking their clothes off to dance. I have been to some great shows but never been so moved out of my clothes.

I remember losing all my friends in the parking lot as I tried to negotiate entry through the crew gate. When I finally got inside I couldn't find anyone so I just hung out. When I saw a guy next to me popping a tab, I asked if I could buy one. He said no, then gave me one. Uckin Fay!!!!! All of the sudden during space the horns blew and my whole body shivered from the sounds. I thought I would never get to hear Casey the way the older heads talked, but I lucked out!! Being from DC doesn't hurt.

First set was totally weak. I was on the floor and nobody was really grooving. It wasn't until Picasso that things got moving, but by then the set was almost over. My friends and I decided to guy way up high in the stadium so that we could rip bong hits. How my friend smuggled it in is still a mystery to this day. So we pulled tubes for the whole second set, got a little excited when they ripped into Casey Jones, but they soon deflated that excitement with Throwin'> Saturday Night. What's with the Baba O'Riley nonsense? That one never really clicked for me. Where was the Grateful Dead that I had known and loved through the late 80's?

We were hanging out by the truck entrance at RFK when we heard the soundcheck - CASEY!!! YEAAHH!! We ran for the fence. Dennis McNally came out and said, "Didn't I tell you guys NOT to show up early and hang out in the lot? JEEEEZus! You people NEVER LISTEN." (and then a big grin...)

Loved this one, Casey was great. This was the first time I got up front. My friends and I were about 10-15 ft from the stage for Steve Miller and the entire first set. That was great. It was a beautiful day, I thought Jerry actually looked good and he looked happy. I remember all the boys smiling and having a good-old time up on stage. I really miss the live music and the energy, I'll never forget those days.

Dug that train horn (not a whistle, in my recollection) at this and a few other shows in that time frame, and, although I've never been a fan of the particularly tune (overplayed on FM and one of the few tunes with which nonbelievers are familiar), Casey Jones, I find the Shenandoah space more memorable. It was a song that the Nuns forced us to memorize, but for some reason, despite their despotism, I always liked it. Also, I always found Jerry's space noodlings intriging, especially when it turned out to be sneakily more than just noodling.

Our toyota van blew up after Charlotte and we were stuck in a hotel along I-95. I thought I was going to miss yet another RFK. Then Dave (my tour partner) told me to keep going and he would wait for the repairs and catch up where ever that may be. I put my pack on and headed over to a gas station where heads had been fueling up all day. I hopped in a 65' VW transport carrying a sign stating "we need pot". I traded for a ride to D.C. As we entered D.C. once again I was in a van that blew up! This time we were close, so close we called AAA and had them tow us into the lot! Everyone cheered as we sat on the roof being towed in. The show wasn't the best but the whistle and Casey that followed was beautiful. After the Casey I turned around and there was Dave standing right behind me smiling. His parents drove from Ohio in their 85' westfalia to the hotel along I-95, gave him their ride, rented a car and drove home! Unbelievably cool parents. So we finished the summer in style! Thanks to Dave, his parents, and Jerry for the Casey Jones. That trip was so good I decided to name my black lab Casey Jones a few years later and it turns out he is as cool as that trip was!

I picked her up with a van full of 'heads at 2 am in East Flatbush. Let me tell you, not the way to meet your girlfriend's father. This was my 6th show of the year and my last as it turned out - the horn and Casey Jones and the Stage Lights were AWESOME!!! This show cost her a job a couple years later when some racist Law Firm Partner told her she wouldn't know anything about a Dead show (because she's black) - naturally she replied, "actually, I caught this great show a couple years ago with my boyfriend where they broke out Casey Jones for the first time in years". Bastard was embarassed as hell. All good we're married and happy and I'm sure he's still an ass.

Out of ALL of the shows that I attended, this was THE BEST SHOW I had ever been to! When they blew the train horn, everybody was freakin' out! We did get a copy of the show from a taper dude. My children were 6 & 3 at the time and they were always asking for us to .." Play the choo-choo train song mommy"... :) I love it!!

We weren't able to get into the show but we could hear it from where we were. Met a lot of kind folks and had a grateful time. The police showed up early in the AM with flatbeds as a gentle reminder, "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here" which we abided by. Took a while to find the car and even longer to find our way out of DC. Hard to read a map when you...well you know. Anyway...had a fantastic time and I wouldn't have missed it.

I had just graduated from Alabama and moved to DC to work for Senator Heflin at the time of this show. I went with a bunch of friends from the Hill and bought tickets outside the stadium. They ended up being counterfeit but the guy at the gate let us in anyway. Probably, my best show ever! A few nights before the concert I was at my friends house in Virginia. His father was the President of VCU and Bruce Hornsby played at the College and attended a dinner at their house. I got to meet him, his wife and twin sons... we talked about the upcoming show (pretty cool). Oh, the Horns!!!
